Since the beginning of 2023, the collective crypto market cap has soared around 25% and has regained the $1 trillion mark, a level not seen since November.The surge in crypto over the past few weeks has seen just about every cryptocurrency making gains, but there are two in particular that stand out from the crowd: Bitcoin and Ethereum.I won't get any points for originality, but these two cryptocurrencies are the cream of the crop. Between them, they account for nearly 60% of all the value in cryptocurrency (Bitcoin 42% and Ethereum 19%). Often, as Bitcoin and Ethereum go, so goes the rest of the asset class.The reason these two tokens occupy a class of their own actually isn't that complicated. Although cryptocurrencies can sometimes seem overly technical and misunderstood, keeping things simple is typically one of the best ways to maximize potential.The original cryptocurrency still has itBitcoin, the world's first cryptocurrency, has led the asset class for more than 14 years. It dominates in large part due to the fact that, for a while, there simply weren't any other cryptocurrencies for investors to buy. This has changed over the past decade, but even though there are now thousands of cryptocurrencies to choose from, Bitcoin still dominates.Its continued leadership is likely due to a handful of reasons -- among them, characteristics such its unmatched decentralization and security, and itsinherent scarcity, which supports the argument that it should be a great store of value. These traits have put Bitcoin in a class of its own, and have led to interest in it from more than just the average retail investor.Since 2021, two countries have made Bitcoin a form of legal tender, the world's largest asset manager announced it would allow clients to own Bitcoin, and some publicly traded companies are holding some Bitcoin in lieu of cash. If trends like these continue, Bitcoin is unlikely to lose its spot as the most valuable cryptocurrency and will likely be the leader when a bull market returns.The champion of DeFiWhile Bitcoin is the leader, Ethereum remains an unshakeable No. 2. When Ethereum was invented in 2015, it completely changed the landscape of cryptocurrency. Due to its programmable smart contracts, developers were able to create applications that ran on the Ethereum blockchain, something not possible with Bitcoin. With these smart contracts, new use cases such as non-fungible tokens(NFTs) and decentralized finance(DeFi) were created.In the past few years, other blockchains that support smart contracts have been created, but none have made any significant progress in usurping Ethereum's dominant position in that segment of the crypto world. No statistic displays this better than Ethereum's total value locked (TVL), a metric that quantifies the value supported by blockchains in DeFi applications.Like a company's market cap, TVL fluctuates, but as of this writing, Ethereum's TVL is just over $27 billion and represents around 60% of all the value in DeFi. The next closest blockchain is BNB, with just $4.7 billion.The huge market share leads that Bitcoin and Ethereum have over their competitors are the primary reasons they will be in the driver's seat when a bull market in crypto returns. In addition, and most importantly, nearly every other cryptocurrency is positively correlated to Bitcoin and Ethereum.If there is anything investors should learn after the debacle of 2022, it's that not every cryptocurrency is worthy of a spot in your portfolio. Rather than trying to spot the next meme coin that could deliver an astronomical gain -- and which will more than likely head back down to zero afterward -- investors should keep it simple. Since most of the asset class follows Bitcoin and Ethereum, why not just own the two leading the way? That creates the opportunity for some cryptos to trade under the radar of investors who are too busy watching Bitcoin.This could be the situation now with Litecoin and Dash, which have pushed steadily higher over the past month at a time when Bitcoin is losing momentum. Litecoin is up 39.70% over the past 30 days, while Dash is up 8.13% over that same time period. In contrast, Bitcoin is down 16.68%.What do all of these coins have in common?Both Litecoin and Dash are based on the same cryptocurrency technology used to create Bitcoin. While Bitcoin launched as the original cryptocurrency back in 2009, Litecoin launched two years later as a \"lite\" version of it, hence the name. This means that the original blockchain developers behind Litecoin decided to split the main blockchain and name the new one Dash.The fact that all three cryptos are related is important because it means all three are based on roughly the same proof-of-work blockchain technology that relies on mining to create new blocks for the blockchain.This also means that all three of these coins undergo a process known as a \"halving\" on a schedule set by an algorithm. In a halving, the block reward for miners is cut by one-half. Bitcoin undergoes a halving every four years, as does Litecoin. Dash undergoes a halving once every 365 days, because the block reward is reduced by only 7.14%, not 50%.How to profit from the halvingHistorically, halving events have been very lucrative for traders and have always been very much anticipated by the crypto market. The easiest way to profit from these events is to buy anywhere from 12 to 15 months ahead of the next halving. Since the date of each halving is determined algorithmically, it is easy to pinpoint when this is going to happen for each coin. The next Bitcoin halving is March 2024, the next Litecoin halving is July 2023, and the next Dash halving is May 2023.Once you understand the timing of these halving events, it's easy to see why Litecoin and Dash both appear to be diverging from Bitcoin right now. If historical models hold, one would expect Dash and Litecoin to benefit first from their respective halving events, and Bitcoin to lag behind by at least several months. Moreover, since the Dash halving is not nearly as pronounced as the Litecoin halving (7.14% compared to 50%), one would also expect a greater rally in the price of Litecoin than in Dash, which is what we are seeing. Right now, traders are expecting that Litecoin could have a 200% price rally by the time of its next halving.More potential than Bitcoin, but for how long?For this reason, Litecoin and Dash could have more potential than Bitcoin over the near-term future. Crypto publications are already starting to talk about the \"pre-halving rally\" for Litecoin, which has only intensified the impact of this effect. Since the Bitcoin halving is not going to happen until 2024, it will likely trade sideways for the rest of this year and into early 2023. Thus, a very short-term window exists for Litecoin and Dash to outperform Bitcoin. At a time when much of the crypto market is deep in the red, this could be a sneaky opportunity to profit from both Litecoin and Dash.Over the long term, though, I'm still much more bullish on Bitcoin than on either Litecoin or Dash. For example, some traders are predicting that Bitcoin could rally to $63,000 by March 2024 as a result of investor anticipation of the next halving. If there is one cryptocurrency to buy and hold for the long term, it's Bitcoin. There's also a good chance he's still on the hunt for opportunities as 2022 draws to a close. Here are three stocks Buffett is likely buying in December.1. Berkshire HathawayWe can put Berkshire Hathaway itself at the top of the list of stocks Buffett is probably buying this month. As my colleague Sean Williams recently pointed out, over the last six years, the legendary investor's giant conglomerate has bought $9 billion more of its own stock than it has of Apple and Chevron combined.These purchases have been made via Berkshire's stock buybacks. Buffett and his longtime business partner Charlie Munger basically have an open checkbook for the company to repurchase shares when they think the stock is attractively priced.In the first nine months of this year, the conglomerate bought back $5.2 billion worth of its shares, including $1 billion worth in Q3.That doesn't mean Buffett is necessarily continuing to buy back Berkshire Hathaway shares, of course. However, I'd be surprised if he isn't doing so. The share price is lower now than it was during much of the first half of the year.2. Jefferies Financial GroupIt was looking for a while like Buffett had largely lost his ardor for bank stocks. However, he zigged when many might have thought he'd zag in Q3 by initiating a position in Jefferies Financial Group.Granted, Jefferies is a different kind of financial institution than the ones Buffett has favored in the past. It focuses exclusively on investment banking rather than commercial banking. It's also much smaller than other banks that have been or still are in the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio.I think the odds are high that Buffett bought more shares of Jefferies in Q4, and that activity has potentially continued into December. Why? Because Berkshire Hathaway only owned a very small stake in the company at the end of Q3.This doesn't guarantee that Buffett added to his position in Jefferies this quarter or is buying more shares in December. However, the unusually small initial stake in the financial company could indicate that those Q3 purchases were made near the end of the quarter, and that more buying followed.3. Occidental PetroleumBuffett has been backing up the truck and loading up on Occidental Petroleum this year. It's a big and bold bet that's already paying off. Oxy's shares have skyrocketed by more than 130% year to date.His buying frenzy with Occidental began in the first quarter and continued into the second and third. Based on the latest information available, Berkshire now owns 21.4% of Occidental.There are two main reasons why I suspect Buffett either has bought more shares of Occidental stock this quarter or will buy more in December. For one thing, Berkshire obtained regulatory approval in August to acquire up to 50% of the oil company. I don't think that the conglomerate would have pursued that thumbs-up if there wasn't a plan for it to buy a lot more shares of Occidental Petroleum.The more important factor, though -- in my view -- is that Buffett believes that Occidental is a smart investment. The stock remains attractively valued despite its huge gains this year. Buffett also probably expects the tailwinds for the energy sector will continue to blow strongly into 2023 and perhaps include a mix of flatted factories, hi-tech buildings, and data centres spread out across Singapore and the US.</p><p>MIT has demonstrated tremendous growth since its fiscal 2011 (FY2011) ending 31 March 2011.</p><p>The REIT started with an AUM of S$2.2 billion back then and has more than quadrupled it in more than a decade.</p><p>For its fiscal 2023’s second quarter (2Q2023), the industrial REIT saw distributable income inch up 0.7% year on year to S$89 million.</p><p>Distribution per unit (DPU), however, dipped by 3.2% year on year to S$0.0336 due to higher operating expenses and borrowing costs.</p><p>Despite this, MIT maintained a high portfolio occupancy of 95.6% with nearly three-quarters of its loans hedged to fixed rates.</p><p>The REIT has promised to release S$6.6 million of tax-exempt income over three quarters to mitigate the fall in DPU.</p><p>MIT’s redevelopment project at Kolam Ayer 2 should start contributing rental income after its full completion by the second half of 2023.</p><p><b>Parkway Life REIT (SGX: C2PU)</b></p><p>Parkway Life REIT, or PLife REIT, is one of the largest healthcare REITs in Asia with a portfolio worth S$2.4 billion as of 30 September 2022.</p><p>The healthcare REIT owns a total of 61 properties across Singapore, Japan and Malaysia.</p><p>PLife REIT boasts an uninterrupted increase in its core DPU since FY2008, going from S$0.0683 per unit to S$0.1408 by FY2021.</p><p>For the first nine months of 2022 (9M2022), gross revenue saw a 1.3% year on year dip to S$89 million.</p><p>Net property income (NPI), however, inched up 0.1% year on year to S$82.8 million.</p><p>PLife REIT’s gearing stood at just 34.7%, giving the REIT ample debt headroom of S$706.7 million before hitting the 50% leverage threshold.</p><p>After signing a new master lease agreement for its Singapore hospitals last year, PLife REIT recently announced the commencement of renewal capex works at Mount Elizabeth that will be completed by December 2025.</p><p><b>Keppel DC REIT (SGX: AJBU)</b></p><p>Keppel DC REIT owns a portfolio of 23 data centres spread across nine countries with an AUM of S$3.6 billion as of 30 September 2022.</p><p>The REIT has conducted several acquisitions in the past year that have helped to boost its DPU.</p><p>Last December, it acquired its second data centre in London for around S$105.5 million. This property sits on freehold land and is DPU-accretive.</p><p>Then earlier in June, Keppel DC REIT scooped up two data centres in Guangdong, China, for approximately S$297.1 million.</p><p>This acquisition should grow DPU by 2.7% and improve portfolio occupancy further to 98.9%.</p><p>The data centre REIT achieved a commendable performance for 9M2022.</p><p>Gross revenue edged up 0.7% year on year to S$205.9 million while distributable income climbed 8.5% year on year to S$138.1 million.</p><p>DPU increased by 3.4% year on year to S$0.07634.</p><p><b>CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust (SGX: C38U)</b></p><p>CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, or CICT, is a retail cum commercial REIT with a total property value of S$24.2 billion as of 31 December 2021.</p><p>The REIT owns 21 properties in Singapore, two in Frankfurt, and three in Sydney.</p><p>CICT released a robust set of numbers for its latest fiscal 2022’s third quarter (3Q2022) business update.</p><p>Gross revenue for 9M2022 rose 8.9% year on year to S$1.1 billion while NPI increased by 8.4% year on year to S$775 million.</p><p>CICT also has a strong sponsor in real estate giant <b>CapitaLand Investment Limited</b> (SGX: 9CI).</p><p>Investors should feel assured that no single tenant contributes more than 5.1% of the REIT’s gross rental income.</p><p>Elsewhere, CICT also has 80% of its total borrowings on fixed rates, thereby mitigating a sharp rise in finance costs that may eat into its distributable income.</p></body></html>","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Despite having more than $345 billion invested in around four dozen securities, 93% of Warren Buffett's portfolio can be traced to just four sectors.Technology: 44.18% of invested assetsAlthough Buffett's company owns a half-dozen tech stocks, it's Apple that accounts for the lion's share of Berkshire Hathaway's investment portfolio. As of this past weekend, Apple made up 40% of Berkshire's invested assets.What makes Apple so special is its dominance in a variety of categories. It's widely regarded as the world's most valuable brand, and it has an exceptionally loyal customer base. Within the U.S., the company's iPhone accounts for more than half of all smartphone market share.Beyond the physical products that brought the company fame, Apple CEO Tim Cook is leading a multiyear shift that's designed to promote subscription services. For Apple, subscription services should be a higher-margin segment that leads to predictable quarterly cash flow. In short, it's a way to mitigate revenue fluctuations tied to physical product replacement cycles.The other intriguing investment within tech is Buffett's newest: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which is better known as TSMC. What makes this a seemingly no-brainer investment for Buffett is TSMC is the exclusive supplier of silicon processing chips used in Apple's products. If the Oracle of Omaha and his investment team expect Apple to outperform over the long run, it's only logical that its chip supplier would benefit, too.Financials: 24.08% of invested assetsWithout question, the least surprising aspect of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio is that financial stocks play a key role. As of the end of last week, Buffett's company was invested in 17 financial securities (this includes two exchange-traded funds) that equated to about $83.3 billion in market value.The reason Buffett loves putting Berkshire's money to work in financial stocks is that they get the benefit of time as an ally. Despite recessions being a regular part of the economic cycle, periods of expansion last considerably longer than recessions. Owning an assortment of banks, insurers, and payment providers allows Berkshire Hathaway to take advantage of the natural expansion in U.S. and global gross domestic product -- as well as consumer and enterprise spending -- over time.The largest financial in Berkshire's investment portfolio is Bank of America. At the moment, BofA's interest rate sensitivity is its biggest catalyst. No large bank stock will see its net interest income fluctuate more with changes to the yield curve than Bank of America. Considering that the Federal Reserve has no choice but to aggressively raise rates in order to tame historically high inflation, BofA is set to generate billions of dollars in added net interest income.Credit-services provider American Express is another large and longtime holding. The beauty of AmEx's operating model is that the company is able to double dip during periods of expansion. In addition to bringing in merchant fees, it also collects interest income and cardholder fees as a lender.Energy: 12.99% of invested assetsPrior to 2022, energy stocks hadn't accounted for more than 8.9% of Warren Buffett's investment portfolio at any point this century. But that's changed in a big way, with energy stocks accounting for nearly 13% of invested assets as of this past week.The real jaw-dropper is that the $44.9 billion Buffett and his team have apportioned to \"energy stocks\" are tied up in just two companies: Chevron and Occidental Petroleum.
