Shareholders of record will receive two additional shares in the form of a dividend after the market closes on Aug. 24. Tesla cited accessibility of shares as its main reason for the split. This certainly makes sense, as retail investors own more than 45% of TSLA stock outstanding. Tesla last split shares in 2020, sending its stock more than 80% higher from the time of the announcement to the actual split.Why exactly did Soros buy TSLA stock? Well, the move is not really a big surprise. Tesla is the clear leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market. In the first half of 2022, the company boasted a 68% market share in the U.S. EV market. In 2021, that figure stood even higher at 69.95%.Although a market share loss of nearly 2% is not ideal, Tesla’s numbers are still impressive when you consider other EV makers saw U.S. deliveries rise by 58% in the first half of 2022. Tesla makes four of the five top-selling EVs in the States, with the Model Y coming in first. Established automaker Ford (NYSE:F) commands only one spot on the list.Tesla also has a robust production process while rivals like Rivian and Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID) still struggle to work their way up. During earnings, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla’s Berlin factory exceeded 1,000 EVs per week in June. The new Texas factory is expected to exceed 1,000 cars per week in the coming months as well. Meanwhile, Lucid expects to produce between 6,000 and 7,000 vehicles this year. Those are levels, that are worth playing for,” he added.</p><h2>A bounce?</h2><p>Others are calling the recent rise a bear market rally, or bounce.</p><p>“I think this is nothing more than a bear market bounce. We had the same thing back in March,” Oxbow Advisors managing partner Ted Oakley recently told Yahoo Finance Live.</p><p>“This looks very normal. You get these all along. We don’t see anything that would make you even remotely believe we’re into a new bull market here.”</p><p>The economic impacts of a worldwide slowdown haven't fully played out yet, argues Ann Berry, founder of Threadneedle Ventures.</p><p>“I don’t think that we are actually near a bottom quite yet. And the reason for that is that we haven’t really seen the full impact of what the global slowdown is going to do the US economy,” Berry recently said in a Yahoo Finance Live interview.</p><p>“If we look at the S&P 500 we know that about 40% of revenue represented from companies in that index, come from international markets which are seeing a double whammy right now. And if so, what?</b></h2><p>In speaking about companies which are able to weather recessions, Berry noted, “What I am trying to do is shore up positions in businesses like JNJ (JNJ), companies like Walmart (WMT)."</p><p>"It's what I'm a fan of, where I do think we’ve seen cracks in valuation disproportionate relative to the stability of those businesses, and relative to navigate a recession and come out stronger on the other side,” she added.</p><p>Timing the bottom of a bear market is impossible, Megan Horneman, chief investment officer at Verdence Capital Advisors wrote in a recent note to investors.</p><p>"While several capitulation indicators (e.g., sentiment) suggest the worst is behind us, we are cautious that we will see another leg lower as potential earnings growth becomes more realistic," she cautioned.</p><p>"However, for investors that have cash sitting on the sidelines, gradually adding as we navigate through the bottom of this bear is recommended. Especially into those areas that may have already priced in peak pessimism and have already seen earnings estimates adjust accordingly (e.g., small and midcap)," added Horneman.</p><p>Mona Mahajan, Edward Jones senior investment strategist told Yahoo Finance Live a longer-term rally will require reining in inflation.</p><p>“If we start to see inflation rollover in earnest, you know, call it two, three, maybe and four inflation readings lower, that's when we really could see, you know, the Fed in earnest start to not only move at a more gradual pace, but perhaps endorse a pause or so. And that's when equities, we think, and markets broadly, will sustain a more, or mount a more, sustainable rally. That's when you may start to see the growth parts of the market really pick up. So we'd say now, defensively oriented and tilted,” she said.</p><p>“But if we gradually start layering in some of that growth as a barbell or a complement to your defensive positioning in the months ahead, that really puts together a nice portfolio that could be set up nicely as we enter the back half of this year in 2023,” she said.</p><p>A move back towards the June lows, and even lower is possible, says Mike Wilson, equity strategist at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSSXL\">Morgan Stanley</a>.</p><p>“We think the June lows are vulnerable at the index level,” Wilson told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. “We do think those June lows will be taken out at the index level. But at the stock level there’s probably many stocks that have already bottomed at that June low and that’s the name of the game- we're trying to pick the right spots to be."</p><p>Wilson went on to say, “What I would suggest to the listeners, is that you wait for this retest sometime in the fall, as the numbers come down and as we go through the old lows, towards 3,500 maybe [on the S&P 500]. That’s where you begin to start accumulating. Because that next low, will be the more sustainable one, that we think could lead to truly the next bull market which could be as early as next year."</p><h2><b>Will investors know when they see true capitulation?</b></h2><p>“Keep in mind the last part of these bear markets are usually kind of the most vicious because you finally get that capitulation which you really haven’t seen yet," said Wilson.</p><p>“We saw some selling of course in the spring. People were kind of bearish, but we haven't seen any true fear. We’ve seen people kind of more agitated — and irritable about losing money. But not really fearful. And I think that’s still coming," he added.</p><p>Capitulation happens when we stop asking about it, Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers recently told Yahoo Finance Live.</p><p>"We haven't given up all hope," noted Sosnick, as people are still asking when is it time to buy stocks.</p><p>"The real capitulation happens when people say, 'Oh God. The 90-day correlation coefficient of Bitcoin and the S&P 500, after weakening slightly in June, now stands around 0.65 once again, among the highest such readings in Bloomberg data going back to 2010. A coefficient of 1 means the assets are moving in lockstep, while minus-1 would show they’re moving in opposite directions.Cryptocurrencies are poised for outperformance “if equities have bottomed,” said Mike McGlone, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “There are few more powerful forces in markets than when the stock market drops at high velocity as in the first half. Cryptos are part of that ebbing tide.”That’s been the refrain all year, with both stocks and crypto moving in similar fashion. The background is a hawkish Federal Reserve that’s bent on tamping down four-decade-high inflation, something that’s been the source of volatility for all manner of assets in 2022.But whether equities and crypto have reached their lows is a question no one can call with any real certainty -- bottoms are only perceptible after the fact, and it’s possible both revisit their lows later this year or even early next year.Bitcoin active addresses are firmly within “a well-defined downtrend channel,” according to analysts at Glassnode, a crypto researcher. They added that network activity “suggests that there remains little influx of new demand as yet.” But at the same time, transactional demand has traded sideways or lower in recent weeks, suggesting that “only the stable base of higher conviction traders and investors remain.” And on-chain transaction fees are in bear-market territory -- seeing an uptick there could be a signal of recovery, once it happens.“The 2022 bear market has been historically negative for the digital asset space,” the analysts wrote in a note. “However, after such a sustained period of risk-off sentiment, attention turns to whether it is a bear market relief rally, or the start of a sustained bullish impulse.”July was a great period for Bitcoin, Ether and others. Bitcoin rose 27% for the month, the most since October, while the No. 2 token added 70% in its best monthly performance since January 2021. Also during the month, total volumes of the Tether stablecoin for Bitcoin and Ether rose, according to CryptoCompare, suggesting investors were looking at them as safer places within the crypto universe.To be sure, though crypto has rallied in recent weeks, it’s still well off its highs reached toward the end of last year. Bitcoin has been hovering around $23,000, down from nearly $69,000 in November. There’s also talk of a “game changing” AV/VR headset and even of an Apple Car at some point.But Needham analyst Laura Martin thinks there’s also the prospect of another big revenue stream.“We believe AAPL is in the early stages of building a new mobile advertising platform,” says Martin, who thinks ad revenue could be a “material upside value driver” for the tech giant for several reasons.For one, there’s the offensive element. Apple being the largest company in the world, to keep on growing it must focus on big global TAMs (total addressable markets). As eMarketer expects the global digital advertising market to reach $600 billion this year, it certainly qualifies as one.There’s also a defensive element, as explained by Martin: “Creating a privacy-first ad platform would solve a problem for AAPL's ad-driven apps which have seen their ad revs fall after iOS replaced IDFA with ATT in 3Q21.”It also amounts to a clever tactical move. Apple operates as a “Walled Garden” and its user data is “best-in-class.” All the while, it is also reducing the tracking and transparency data accessible to other companies. There’s evidence of Apple's advertising ambitions, as the company's recent job postings imply a new AdTech platform is being built. Since the early months of the year, there has been a notable increase in the company’s recruiting activity for its Ad Platform unit. Just recently, Apple put up a job opening for \"a senior manager for its DSP in its ads platforms business who will drive the design of the most privacy-forward, sophisticated demand side platform possible.\" Moreover, Apple made its presence felt during June’s Cannes Lions advertising festival. This suggests to Martin, the company is trying to “drive awareness among marketers that it is in the advertising business.”So, down to the nitty-gritty, what does it all mean for investors? That surge helped balloon the combined valuation of its Class A and Class B shares to upwards of $300 billion as of Tuesday’s close, making it the third largest financial stock in the world. But the company reported just $25 million in revenue for the year ended April 2021, a far cry from the hundreds of billions of dollars made by industry titans like Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co.On Friday the company announced that the underwriters of its mid-July initial public offering had decided to exercise their full greenshoe option to purchase up to an additional 2.4 million American depositary shares at their listing price of $7.80 each. AMTD said it expects the issuance of the additional shares to be completed by Aug. 8.The stock’s rapid rise and fall has also led to wild moves in the shares of its parent company, AMTD Idea. That firm, which is part of the larger AMTD Group umbrella, owns roughly 88.7% of AMTD Digital’s outstanding shares. It too saw a wave of frenzied buying this week, soaring as much as 520% on Tuesday alone, while attracting heavy interest from retail traders.But AMTD Idea’s gains also proved to be fleeting, as the stock dropped 39% after peaking on Tuesday, although it rebounded about 7.4% on Friday.
