It posted second-quarter results that may have failed to exceed expectations but confirmed that its turnaround is succeeding on most fronts.Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its operating-cash generated turned positive for the period. The country's leading multiplex operator also announced a stock dividend that should shake out any potential fake or synthetic short positions in AMC.It wasn't enough. The stock was trading more than 10% lower by Thursday night.There's still a lot to like in AMC's flawed but encouraging performance. The market may not have been initially impressed, but the stock has rallied sharply since bottoming out in the single digits back in May. Besides, if you've plopped yourself down at an AMC screening lately, you know that there'll be plot twists until the final credits roll.We've seen dramatic trading-day reversals at AMC before. Let's take a closer look at the good and the not so good in Thursday's developments.Everything, everywhere all at onceAMC's revenue rose 162% to $1.1664 billion. It's a big move, but this was roughly in line with expectations.We knew this would be a big step up for the exhibitor. Domestic box-office receipts for the industry in the second quarter soared 186%, compared to the weak slate in the springtime of last year. International exhibitors fared even better -- an important point since 22% of AMC's top-line results were international.Taking a deeper dive into its stateside operations, AMC lost market share -- but this isn't a deal-breaker. The number of tickets that AMC sold in the U.S. for the quarter rose 144%, and the average price paid per ticket climbed 5.7%. Stack one on top of the other, and you arrive at a 153% year-over-year increase, a big move but well below the national pop. This isn't a failure on AMC's part as much as it is smaller chains finally gaining momentum after false starts earlier in the pandemic cycle.The truly disappointing metric in terms of theater-level performance is that folks are starting to spend less after scanning their admissions to get into the local multiplex. The average food and beverage revenue per domestic patron has declined 5% over the past year, going from $7.91 to $7.52. The international drop is a more substantial 8% decline.This also isn't awful news. It was only natural for folks to overspend early last year, when returning to the movies after a long absence was a novelty. It's still comfortably above pre-pandemic spending levels, and as long as it stabilizes here, AMC should be fine with this high-margin part of its business.AMC's adjusted net loss -- once you take out the gain from the early extinguishment of debt and the hit from the sharp drop in market value of its Hycroft Mining investment -- clocks in at $102.8 million, or $0.20 a share. This is also roughly what analysts were modeling, but it's still encouraging to see AMC's adjusted bottom line generating less than a third of the red ink it was gushing a year earlier.With its operating cash generated and adjusted EBITDA now firmly positive, AMC is in a better position to tackle its rising borrowing costs (because cash interest expense has climbed 60% over the past year).UnchartedIn a move to bust the potential ring of fake short-sellers, AMC also declared a special dividend of an AMC Preferred share for every share outstanding. It will essentially be the equivalent of a 2-for-1 stock split, only the preferred stock will trade under the ticker symbol APE when it's distributed in two weeks.The move is intended to smoke out illegal shorts, but once again, we had CEO Adam Aron tweeting on Thursday night that he's seen no evidence of synthetic shorting of the multiplex operator.6. Candidly I've seen no evidence so-called fake or synthetic shares exist. But many of you disagree. This preferred equity dividend goes ONLY to company issued shares. TheDow Industrial Index fell by around 2% while the S&P 500 was down 3.2%. Tech stocks were hit even harder with the Nasdaq down about 4.3%. So far this downtrend has continued until today.It is in this market environment that GameStop’s(NYSE:GME) stock has remained largely afloat. I know that may be a weird thing for me to say given the price action of GME stock. At the beginning of April, GME stock traded at a high close to $188. Yesterday, it broke down below the crucial psychological support of $100.However, GME stock rallied from a YTD low of $77.58. I believe that these lows can be tested once again. In other words, there is still more pain to come despite the roughly 40% month-on-month decline.Remember, the phenomenon of the GameStop rally was a purely liquidity-driven event. In the event of inflation, the Federal Reserve is now making moves to drain that liquidity from the system. According to a Blackrock analyst, “The Ukraine war, a global energy shock and the risk the Fed tries to fight the supply-driven inflation have sparked a reassessment of macro scenarios among market participants.”This means that the market will eventually need to reassess GameStop on a fundamental basis. In other words, looking at the business, assessing cash flows and all of the other boring stuff we seem to have forgotten how to do. In that case, GameStop isn’t faring that well.Videogame sales decreased year-over-year for the fifth straight month in March. Compared to the same time in 2021, overall sales were 15% lower. This trend could continue to accelerate as higher prices pinch consumers’ discretionary spending budgets.Remember that GME stock was trading at around $5 prior to 2021’s legendary short squeeze. Yet as with the previous times in recent months that AMC stock has spiked, expect its recent move back above $30 per share to be short-lived.The rally by AMC and the stock market have inspired many meme-stock investors to dive back into AMC. But these new developments do not do much to bolster the stock’s outlook, and a recent investment by the company is hardly the “big deal” that some seem to believe it is.Meanwhile, the resurgence in the bullishness towards AMC stock among investors may not last. Some of the previous uncertainty about the Fed’s rate hikes may be easing. Still, other worries, including the possibility of a recession, may cause stocks to ultimately fall. Such a decline would result in meme plays like AMC falling more quickly than the overall market.That’s particularly true because AMC stock continues to trade at a high premium to its underlying value. Don’t get tricked by its latest move higher. In time, the latest surge will likely prove to be little more than a “dead cat bounce.”Why AMC Stock Has Bounced BackAs I mentioned above, multiple factors are behind AMC’s jump from around $16 to more than $20 per share in recent days. First is the factor that has sparked the most headlines: the company announced that it plans to buy22% ofHycroft Mining Holding Corporation(NASDAQ:HYMC).Secondly, the stock market has performed well since mid-March. The market’s resurgence kicked off following Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s latest remarks on the central bank’s rate-hike plans. Clearing up some of the uncertainty, the chairman’s statements have helped to lessen some of the investors’ pessimism towards the market. Unfortunately, both of these factors will only temporarily impact the price of AMC stock.But there are important reasons to believe that the market has not yet bottomed. Specifically, we know for sure that further rate hikes are coming, and that the chances of a recession have risen.If a recession is indeed in the cards, the relief rally will fade, and stocks will move lower. This will likely reverse AMC’s recent gains and quite possibly send it even lower, as a recession isn’t just bad for the stock, but for the company’s business as well.AMC’s Business Continues to Flounder, and the Hycroft Deal Won’t Save the DayA recession would undermine AMC stock in two ways. First, if an economic downturn does occur, the stock market will sink. And as we saw in the first 2.5 months of the year, when the stock market retreats, meme plays like AMC underperform.Additionally, a recession will, of course, mean that the American economy is contracting. During the current economic expansion, robust consumer spending has helped AMC’s business partially recover from the pandemic. Yet with inflation at 40-year highs, consumer spending is already starting to slip,and an economic downturn would cause household spending to decline further.Even worse for AMC, streaming’s popularity could increase further and take more market share from theaters, as more movie fans opt to save money by watching new flicks at home. The resulting impact on AMC’s performance will outweigh the limited gains that it will generate from its Hycroft investment.Speaking of Hycroft, as anotherInvestorPlacecolumnist, Dana Blankenhorn, recently put it, all that glitters is not gold when it comes to this deal. While Hycroft, a junior miner, is sitting on a gold mine (both literally and figuratively), there’s a reason why HYMC stock is a small-cap penny stock.It’s going to take far more cash than AMC’s investment or the proceeds from an at-the-market secondary offering for Hycroft to extract the tens of billions of dollars of hard-to-reach gold and silver that are supposed to be in its northern Nevada mine. A payoff from AMC’s investment in the miner is years away at best and will never arrive at worst.The Takeaway From AMC’s Recent RallyAs I argued back in February, the fair value of AMC is less than $10. And that’s assuming that it continues to deliver results in -line with its Q4 earnings. An economic downturn will push the shares closer to their fair value and lower that fair value as belt-tightening among consumers will stymie its post-virus recovery.So what should investors do with AMC stock after its latest surge? Those who own the shares should exploit the stock’s rally by selling them. At the same time, metals investor Eric Sprott invested a similar amount into Hycroft.CEO Adam Aron said AMC's own near-death experience has made it willing and able to help other businesses also knocking at death's door.In recent years, however, AMC Entertainment has had enormous success and demonstrated expertise in guiding a company with otherwise valuable assets through a time of severe liquidity challenge, the raising of capital, and strengthening of balance sheets, as well as communicating with individual retail investors. It is all that experience and skill that we bring to the table to assist the talented mining professionals at Hycroft.However, investors should be even more wary of investing in AMC than they were before.Image source: Getty Images.In the pitsAMC is not healthy. Despite having established significant liquidity by using its meme stock popularity to raise cash, the movie industry has not recovered. There are fewer movies planned for release in 2022, and that will result in even lower theater attendance than was the case even before the pandemic. So taking resources away from bolstering the business is more than just surprising.More so because Hycroft Mining is not an active miner. It ceased operations at its only mine in Nevada last November, saying it wanted to switch to building a mill to process gold and silver sulfide ore.The problem is, Hycroft hasn't even done a feasibility study on whether the method Hycroft wants to use to process the ore will even work or is economically feasible. It says its previous plan for using a novel two-stage sulfide heap oxidation and leach process is not economical at current metal prices, so it will instead consider using an alternative process, though it's not yet proven it can be workable at a commercial scale.AMC, however, says third-party analyses confirm Hycroft has \"rock-solid assets,\" with 15 million ounces of gold deposits and around 600 million ounces of silver deposits at its Nevada mine.Hoping something sticksInvesting $28 million in a defunct gold miner when you have $1.8 billion sitting in the bank is in itself not much of an issue. Even if the whole enterprise goes belly up, it's not going to severely affect the company, and if it's successful, it may make some money on the deal. So why not, right?The problem arises from the mindset behind such an investment. The scattershot approach to trying something --anything!-- to get some kind of a return that's completely unrelated to your core competency indicates your actual business is not worth investing in.Buying a business in which you have no knowledge or understanding of the industry, only that it looks kind of similar to the situation you found yourself in, is hardly the way to be using shareholder resources.Aron has indicated he wants to think outside the box when it comes to reviving AMC, and not all of the options involve movies per se.For example, Aron recently revealed six strategies he saw AMC undertaking that included developing non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, and selling popcorn in retail stores. He did say he wanted to make more acquisitions, but I suspect most people thought he meant in line with the theater chain acquisitions he previously made. Buying a gold and silver miner was probably not on anyone's bingo card.Suspicious trading activityThe investment is likely to get SEC scrutiny too. CNBC reports there was highly unusual trading occurring in the days just preceding the announcement of the investment.It says analysis of FactSet data shows the 90-day average trading volume of Hycroft stock was around 355,000 shares prior to the news, but the day before, it spiked to 58.6 million shares, bringing the 90-day average up to 10.5 million shares.Indeed, last Friday, trading surged to 340 million shares, or five times greater than Hycroft's outstanding share count, and its stock rocketed from $0.30 a share to $1.40 the day before AMC announced its investment, a better than four-fold increase in price.Fool's goldInvesting legend Peter Lynch had a word for when companies go far afield like this: \"de-worsi-fication.\"In a bid to engage in a bit of empire building, CEOs graft wildly unrelated businesses onto their operations, ones that do nothing to strengthen the primary company -- and they tend to end badly.There was a lot to make investors cautious about taking a stake in AMC Entertainment before this. However, theaters are now open at full capacity, but foot traffic still lags pre-pandemic levels. The past couple of months have been highly encouraging, though, for the company with the release of two blockbuster superhero flicks.Despite its recent success, it’s going to take a lot for AMC to strike a chord with long-term investors.AMC Stock: Superheroes to the RescueAMC ended last year with a bang, reporting a colossal bump in revenues from 2020.$1.17 billion in saleswas a massive improvement from the $162.5 million it made during the same quarter last year. Moviegoers are becoming more comfortable returning to theaters, and the trend has benefitted AMC immensely.The release of the latest “Spider-Man” flick was perhaps solely responsible for the incredible showing during the fourth quarter. Having earned over$1.85 billionat the box office, the film has become the third highest-grossing film in cinema history. AMC’s management credited pent-up demand and a strong advertising campaign for the film’s massive success.Furthermore, the management did well in capitalizing on the pent-up demand by raising ticket prices. Average ticket prices in the U.S. were up to$11.50in the fourth quarter, up 15.5% from the prior-year period. Similarly, the food and beverage spending also increased by double digits in the last quarter.The momentum hasn’t stopped, though. The recent release of “The Batman”resulted in the third-best weekend the theater chain has had in the past couple of years. Before that, “Uncharted’s” releaseresulted in massive growthnumbers in February from the prior-year period.Considering the recent success of the three blockbusters discussed earlier, studios might want to reassess their stance on streaming services. Film studios are focusing on their streaming platforms and seem to be disregarding the theater experience for their users.Balance Sheet WoesWith such an incredible showing during the fourth quarter, AMC’s investors will have been curious about its balance sheet positioning. The company could generate a healthy positive cash flow of $8 million. Moreover, most of its financial metrics improved substantially from 2020. Despite that, the company’s netliabilities improved by just $546 millionin 2021 from last year.AMC is still seeking shareholder approval from last year to raise its share count. Consequently, its working capital growth has stalled. Additionally, it announced a massive debt refinancing transaction. The company will be offering new debt to push back maturities effectively and pay back some of its old debt. Nevertheless, it comes at a major cost to AMC, as was detailed by its management in its fourth-quarter filing. To extinguish the higher-rate debt, the management will have to record over $100 million in losses.Final Word on AMC StockAMC has posted some impressive results of late on the back of a strong film slate.
