When I posted my original piece on $SVB Financial Group(SIVB)$ Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), the main objective was to pose the question whether the saga presented an opportunity to pick up any banking stocks at possible “bargain” prices.
The big difference in 2022 was made by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The year started positively, following on from the excellent stock market year 2021. Despite rising inflation that year, interest rates remained historically low. As a result, we started 2022 with extremely negative real interest rates, and something like that always does wonders for financial markets. It even briefly reminded us of the times of the dot-com bubble when money was also free. Only this time, the excesses outside the stock market were much bigger than in the stock market. The valuation was high, but not as extreme as a valuation belonging to a bubble. Then the stock market could still easily rise by 30 to 50 per cent. It was not to be. There was barely a week between the official end of restrictive measure
$Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$ TSMC just reported its Nov 2022 revenue of NT222.71 billion, which is another record high! This represents a 50.2% y-o-y increase and 5.9% m-o-m increase from Oct 2022. Very impressive! Despite challenges in the slumping consumer electronics and Covid disruptions in China, TSMC revenue momentum seems unstoppable! Currently, Oct-Nov sales are on track to beat prior mid-point guidance given by TSMC management in 3Q22, and these revenue forms around 68% of market consensus for 4Q22, so it's generally in-line with market expectations.
