Overall, with Advanced Micro Devices,IntelThe performance of the chip design manufacturers represented by us is almost less than expected.

Even ifTSMC、Samsung ElectronicsSuch wafer manufacturing giants have also been affected,ASML CorporationEquipment manufacturers such as Fanlin Semiconductor are less affected due to the slow transmission of changes in downstream demand.

These companies are distributed in different links of the semiconductor industry chain, but in this quarter's earnings report or conference call, they almost all lowered their capital expenditures for next year.

This is the result of a \"domino effect\". According to the data of the American Semiconductor Association, since 1976, global semiconductors have experienced a total of 7 major cycles, and are now in the eighth cycle. Looking back at the past half century of semiconductor history, cyclical fluctuations have run through the history of the industry. It often starts with the mismatch between supply and demand. After experiencing shortages and price increases, investment and production expansion, it finally returns to a new round of mismatch between supply and demand due to the concentrated release of production capacity.

Each cycle has its own particularity. This round is the superposition of COVID-19 pandemic, the political game between major powers, and the downturn of the global economic situation, and the ups and downs are more obvious.

A typical example is the unprecedented \"core shortage wave\" in the past two years, which began in COVID-19 pandemic, causing car manufacturers to misestimate the situation, adjust their sales expectations, and then ask foundries to reduce production.

On the other hand, the epidemic has catalyzed the demand for home office, leading to an increase in the demand for consumer electronics. In addition, due to the sanctions imposed by the United States, Huawei has been forced to stock up on a large scale. This \"butterfly effect\" has also caused panic in the industry. Leading to another wave of chip hoarding.

A person from a wafer fab told Huxiu that last year, some foundries would separate the production lines originally used to produce automotive electronic chips and switch to producing chips needed for consumer electronics. Today, the chip cycle is declining and the demand for consumer electronics is weak. In turn, automotive chips are still in short supply, and the supply chain is ushering in new adjustments. However, some insiders pointed out that in the third quarter of this year, the production capacity of some automotive chips also loosened.

Chip giant's performance misses expectations

On November 2, Beijing time, semiconductor company AMD released its financial report for the third quarter of 2022. Revenue increased by 29% compared with the same period last year to US $5.565 billion, which was lower than Wall Street's previous forecast of US $6.5 billion; Under U.S. GAAP, net income was $66 million, a sharp drop of 93%.

AMD's financial report fell short of expectations, and its net profit declined, mainly due to weak demand in the consumer electronics market, which accounted for the main part of global chip sales.

Research firm Future Horizons pointed out that mobile phones and personal computers account for almost half of the US $600 billion worth of chips sold globally every year. According to statistics from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2022 will be 297 million units. A year-on-year decrease of 9%.

At the same time, the global PC market recorded the biggest quarter of decline in nearly 20 years. According to statistics from third-party consulting firm Gartner, global PC shipments totaled 68 million units in the third quarter, a year-on-year decrease of 19.5%.

Data Source : Strategy Analytics, Gartner

\"The PC market was very volatile in the third quarter. We expected the market to be weak, but it was weaker than we expected.\" AMD CEO Lisa Su said that the consumer electronics market is currently the weakest. AMD occupies 25.6% of the market share in this market. Customers have become more cautious overall.

According to AMD's financial report, the revenue of the client business unit linked to the PC business this quarter was US $1.02 billion, a year-on-year decrease of nearly 40%. An intuitive comparison is that this business unit reported an operating loss of $26 million in the quarter, compared with an operating profit of $490 million in the same period last year, with an operating margin of 29%.

However, since Su Zifeng took over AMD, the diversified business strategy she set for the company is currently playing a key role. Despite the poor performance of the client department, server chips and game chips have left a trace of face for AMD's financial report.

The financial report shows that the turnover of AMD's data center division this quarter was US $1.609 billion, a year-on-year increase of 45%. This is mainly due to the excellent performance of EPYC chips in the server market, andXilinxAnd proceeds from the acquisition of another startup, Pensando Systems.

Also affected by the consumer electronics market is Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), which released its third quarter 2022 financial report a week ago, with revenue of US $15.3 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 20%, miss the market expectation; Net profit was US $1 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 85%. This report card allowed Intel to lower its full-year performance guidance again.

The PC and server businesses, which have always been relied on, both declined in the third quarter. PC business (CCG) revenue was US $8.1 billion, down 17% year-on-year; Server chip-related data center and artificial intelligence business (DCAI) fell 27% year-on-year to US $4.2 billion.

Although Intel still holds the top spot in the server chip market, it seems to have shown signs of loosening. Statistics from TrendForce show that in the past two quarters, the market share of Intel's X86 server chips has decreased by about 6 percentage points year-on-year, mainly due to Meta,MicrosoftLarge customers transferred the purchase order of server chips to AMD.

The main business has encountered a cold winter, sluggish growth, and is attacked from both sides. Since Intel CEO Pat Kissinger took office, he has been focusing on expanding a new growth curve for Intel. In March last year, Intel released the IDM2.0 plan, which mainly consists of three parts, the first is the internal factory network, the second is the third-party production capacity, and the new Intel foundry service.

Pat emphasized that IDM2.0 is a magic weapon to win. On the one hand, it can make use of the internal factory network, and on the other hand, it can strategically make use of external foundries to deliver leading products and provide new advanced foundry capacity for the industry.

Recently, the helm of Intel proposed that Intel could use its factory in Ohio to provide AMD andNvidiaProvide OEM services. He said in a later statement that Intel hopes to become Nvidia,QualcommAndAppleThe preferred provider of.

However, the industry still expresses concerns about Intel's foundry model that the road is \"long and difficult\". Chip foundry and IDM are two completely different business models. Chip foundry needs to be closely bound with customers, grow together with customers, and conduct research and development technology. IDM produces its own products and sets its own specifications. Even an IDM factorySamsung, it took a long time to get through its own OEM model, and its yield rate is still criticized so far.

A very real problem is that nowadays, almost all customers of advanced manufacturing processes choose TSMC for OEM. The cost of changing suppliers is extremely high and the possibility is very small. How can Intel grab share from TSMC? On the other hand, how can Intel make its competitors confidently hand over their advanced process business and become Intel customers at the same time.

In addition, Intel has been weak in advancing advanced manufacturing processes. According to the latest report from TrendForce, due to the drag of the Intel 7 process, the current yield rate of the new generation Xeon processor Sapphire Rapids is estimated to be only about 50%-60%, and the mass production time will be postponed from the fourth quarter of this year to the first half of next year.

Perhaps Intel can undertake the OEM of some mature manufacturing processes, but advanced manufacturing processes are the core of high profits. It will take time to get through this path, which has also caused Intel's embarrassing situation today.

However, some veterans in the chip industry told Huxiu that it is difficult for Intel to advance in advanced manufacturing processes. By cooperating with external customers, it can also help Intel accumulate some processes and know-how, which will have certain benefits for its process improvement.

In the past three years, the semiconductor industry has experienced an unprecedented \"core shortage wave\", and now it is facing weak demand for consumer electronics. Global semiconductor uncertainty remains dominant.

The tide recedes, only TSMC is not swimming naked?

Fabs showed great resilience in the third quarter of this year.

The third quarterly report of global foundry giant TSMC shows that during the period, the company achieved revenue of US $20.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 35.9%, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 11.4%, and an operating profit margin of 50.6%, both exceeding market expectations.

The company's strong performance this quarter is closely related to its top customer Apple. According to the information released by TSMC in 2021, 25.93% of the company's operating income comes from Apple. Considering the latter's outstanding performance in the smartphone market this year, we can fully understand the reasons for TSMC's surge in performance.

According to the financial report, in the third quarter of this year, the proportion of advanced process chips in TSMC's revenue further expanded. Chips with 7nm and above processes accounted for 54% of the total revenue, of which 7nm accounted for 26%, and 5nm surpassed 7nm for the first time. The proportion reached 28%.

But even so, TSMC President Wei Zhejia expressed his concerns about the market in 2023 at the financial report meeting. He said that the semiconductor industry may decline in 2023. \"The main reason is that TSMC will continue to face challenges in the delivery of semiconductor equipment.\"

In addition, at this legal conference, Wei Zhejia pointed out that customers' demand for 3nm exceeds TSMC's supply, partly due to persistent machine delivery problems. It is estimated that production will be fully loaded next year, and 3nm revenue will account for About 4-6%. Today, TSMC and Samsung Electronics have become the only two targets to compete after entering the 7nm manufacturing process, which may make TSMC make a lot of money.

Previously, when Nvidia released the RTX 40 series graphics card with a 4nm process, CEO Huang Renxun once complained, \"The current chip foundry is not a little more expensive, but a huge price increase.\" Huang Renxun's statement is by no means sensational. TSMC's gross profit margin in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 50.6%, and by the third quarter of this year, the company's gross profit margin has soared to 60.4%.

According to the statistics of International Business Strategy Company, a third-party analysis organization in the United States, the foundry price of a 5-nanometer process chip is US $25,000, and the cost of a single chip is US $12,500. The foundry price of the 3-nanometer process is expected to be as high as US $30,000.

However, the situation of IDM company Samsung Electronics is not very optimistic. Although the company pointed out in its financial report that the revenue and profit of the wafer foundry business in this quarter achieved the \"best results in history\", it was dragged down by the memory chip market. Samsung Electronics' DS (semiconductor) division performed poorly in the third quarter, with revenue achieving 23.02 trillion won during the period, down 14% year-on-year; Operating profit was 5.12 trillion won, down 49% year-on-year.

Equipment manufacturers, can they still guarantee harvests during droughts and floods?

Compared with tough foundries, equipment manufacturers have risen against the trend this quarter.

October 19th, European time,ASMLASML released its financial report for the third quarter of 2022, achieving revenue of 5.778 billion euros in the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 10.25%; Net profit was 1.701 billion euros, a year-on-year decrease of 2.24%. This performance was higher than the expectations of research firm Refinitiv, whose analysts had previously expected sales of 5.41 billion euros and net profit of 1.42 billion euros.

Although there are frequent reports in the industry that design manufacturers have cut orders, in fact, the pace of fab expansion has not stagnated. According to statistics from the International Institute of Obstetrics of the Taiwan Industrial Research Institute, 41 fabs will be built around the world from 2022 to 2025. These newly built fabs will provide support for the performance of equipment manufacturers this year.

In addition, since the equipment side is at the upstream of the semiconductor industry chain, even if the current demand in the terminal market is becoming increasingly sluggish, changes in demand will not be immediately transmitted to them.

It is worth mentioning that in the third quarter, ASML sold a total of 86 lithography units. Although affected by the U.S. chip restrictions, the company's revenue share in the Chinese mainland market increased from 10% in the previous quarter to 15%. Earlier, according to Bloomberg News, ASML has assured investors that the latest U.S. export control measures restricting China's access to cutting-edge semiconductor technology will have a \"fairly limited\" impact on the company.

Data source: ASML

However, it should be noted that some head equipment manufacturers have already felt the impact of the \"chip restriction order\".

In the early morning of October 20, Beijing time, global semiconductor equipment giant Lam Group released its quarterly financial report as of September 25, with revenue of US $5.1 billion for the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 17.9%; Net profit was US $1.426 billion, up from US $1.18 billion last year; But the gross profit margin was 44.5%, which was not as good as last quarter's 46.1%.

Compared with ASML, Lam Group has a larger market share in mainland China. The financial report shows that in the third quarter, Lam Group's revenue in the Chinese mainland market accounted for as much as 30%.

At the performance exchange meeting after the release of the financial report, the company's CEO Timothy Archer said, \"Recently, the U.S. government announced new export regulations, including wafer manufacturing equipment and related parts and services. For the natural year 2023, we estimate that these restrictions will have an impact on total revenue. The impact is between $2 billion and $2.5 billion.\"

Results of the chip cycle

In the current semiconductor industry, production capacity is king. In addition, the cyclical fluctuations of semiconductors will begin to be transmitted from the downstream, and chip design manufacturers will be the first to be affected. This is one of the reasons why the performance of chip design companies this year is lower than expected.

However, the current semiconductor industry is not the decline of a certain industry or link, but the result of cyclical fluctuations in the industry. Due to the influence of the shortage of cores, many manufacturers are frantically hoarding goods, resulting in an imbalance in market demand. This is the time to eliminate inventory. Some supply chain sources told Huxiu that chip manufacturers have hoarded hundreds of billions of yuan in chips.

According to the latest data released by the Semiconductor Association of America (SIA), in the third quarter of 2022, global semiconductor sales totaled US $141 billion, a decrease of 3% from the same period last year and a decrease of 6.3% from the second quarter. SIA President and CEO John Neuffer believes that after experiencing strong growth in the first half of the year, the semiconductor industry has experienced its first sales decline since 2020.

Substituted into this cycle, due to the massive consumption of chips caused by the rise of new energy vehicles and the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the industrial chain, the semiconductor industry has experienced a large supply gap. Major manufacturers have increased capital expenditures in the past two years.

In this process, affected by the macroeconomic downturn, consumer electronics has weakened, the inventory hoarded by terminal manufacturers has not been consumed in time, and the total market supply has begun to exceed demand.

Market analysis agency Future Horizons believes that in 2021, the capital expenditure of the global semiconductor industry will increase by 45%, which will lead to an increase in production capacity in the second half of this year, leading to oversupply.

Against this background, neither IC design manufacturers nor wafer foundries may be immune.

At a time when the semiconductor industry enters a downward cycle, chip companies cutting capital expenditures is a necessary measure to restore the balance between chip supply and demand. TSMC made it clear at the third quarter performance exchange meeting that capital expenditures in 2022 will be reduced to US $36 billion from the previously estimated US $44 billion to US $40 billion.

As of November 3, including TSMC, Intel,UMC, Micron and other global foundry giants have announced plans to cut capital expenditures.

Industry insiders said that after this cycle downturn, the semiconductor industry may enter a more rational growth situation. It is expected that in the second half of next year, the inventory of consumer electronics will slowly decrease, and the market will gradually enter a dynamic balance of supply and demand.

\n
\n\n\n
,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"INTC":1,"TSM":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1531,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9982597216,"gmtCreate":1667204279235,"gmtModify":1676537876650,"author":{"id":"4123222115080672","authorId":"4123222115080672","name":"Amaxyap","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/702895f37a9b0d8249aa67573c993d21","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4123222115080672","idStr":"4123222115080672"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hallo
