$Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$ Meta is planning to open-source the weights of its most powerful AI models and launch new ones for consumer devices, which looks like a direct move to compete harder with OpenAI and Anthropic. CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned they'll release the weights for the latest Muse Spark 1.2 and introduce the Muse Glimmer family, designed to run directly on laptops and other devices.
The strategy seems aimed at strengthening Meta's position in open-weight AI, where Chinese companies like Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot have been gaining ground. Zuckerberg also argued that U.S. restrictions on training data and AI development could end up disadvantaging American open-source models and called for policy changes to help them compete globally.
Muse Glimmer also pushes Meta further into on-device AI, which could reduce reliance on expensive cloud data centers while improving speed and lowering costs for consumers. The timing is interesting given how closely investors are watching Meta's massive AI spending.
