II. Broader Market Assessment
Volatility this week was generally at annual lows. As a result, when volatility picked up, stock prices easily broke above or below their ranges. Next time we encounter a low-volatility environment, extra caution is warranted.
-
π SPY: Forecast range 761β778, closed Thursday at 773.17. Dipped below the lower bound of 761 intraday (weekly low 759.48), but closed back inside the range.
-
π’ QQQ: Forecast range 704β729, closed Thursday at 717.67. Stayed within range throughout.
Macro factors outweighed industry-specific influences. The first three days of the week carried over hawkish pressure from Jackson Hole, with stocks consolidating at lower levels. On Thursday, September 3, Fed Governor Waller made a dovish statement β supporting a rate hold if inflation continues to ease β which lowered rate-hike expectations and drove a broad pre-market rally on Friday. However, a gap-up and sell-off cannot be ruled out: September 11 brings the August CPI report, and September 18 brings the Fed rate decision β two major events ahead.
Overall volatility expectation: SPY will not break below the 60-day MA; the structural tailwind remains intact.
