China Life - one of the beneficiaries of a hawkish rate environment
💫While most stocks and indices have traded lower on the back of rising inflation and interest rate fears being the dominant theme in markets currently, some stocks such as China Life Insurance are beating the sell-off
➕Rising rates are generally positive for China Life, as they reduce the present value of the insurance contract liabilities that total RMB 6.9 trillion for the company as of 30 Jun 2026 (based on its semi-annual report)
The lower present value of the liabilities in turn lower insurance service expensive and boosts reported profits
Higher rates also allow the company to reinvest maturing assets and new premiums at better yield - which in turn lifts net investment income
According to China Life's last annual report, a +50 basis point move in market interest rates will increase profit before tax by RMB 17.85 billion while a -50 basis point fall in rates will decrease profit by RMB 48.34 billion
Rate hikes therefore tend to be positive share price catalysts for China Life
📈The stock have bounced off the 200-day moving average of HKD 29.04-29.08 levels both yesterday and this morning, and is currently trading 2.7% higher at HKD 30.02 as of 1020AM - one of the rare stock performers in today's sea of red in Asian markets
