$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$ Bottom line:
Berkshire Hathaway Class B (BRK.B)
watchlist
looks like a high-quality long-term compounder, but not a clearly discounted buy at today’s price . My base view is neutral-to-positive for a long horizon , while the near-term risk/reward is less compelling after the shares reached a fresh 52-week high.
Price/technical position: BRK.B was $538.15 on 2026-10-20 , up 1.11% intraday and effectively at its 52-week high of $538.42 . It is at the 99.63rd percentile of its 52-week range. Both short- and medium-term trends are rising; technical support is around $501.95 . This confirms momentum, but also means there is little obvious price dislocation.
Valuation: P/E is 13.46x TTM , P/B is 1.54x , and ROE is 12.12% . For Berkshire, P/E can be misleading because unrealised investment gains/losses move GAAP earnings substantially. P/B is more useful: the current P/B is 2.65% above its five-year median of 1.50x , but still 8.78% above its five-year 20th-percentile level of 1.42x . In other words, valuation is not extreme, but it is not a bargain entry either.
Core operations are improving: 2026H1 revenue was $195.5 billion , up 7.27% YoY ; reported operating income was $46.6 billion , up 72.40% , while net income was $35.8 billion , up 110.76% . The headline profit growth should be treated cautiously because investment marks played a major role. In Q2, operating profit was reported at $13.0 billion, up 16% YoY , while the much stronger net-income figure benefited materially from investment gains.

Balance-sheet advantage remains exceptional: insurance cash and short-term Treasuries were roughly $359 billion at 2026Q2. Berkshire also resumed substantial capital deployment: it repurchased about $4.5 billion of stock in Q2 and became a net equity buyer in the first half. That creates both downside resilience and optionality if asset prices weaken.

Market expectations are restrained: only five analysts are represented in the rating data, with 60% Hold, 40% Buy/Strong Buy . The mean target is $482.07 , 10.42% below the current price, though the sparse coverage makes this a weak signal rather than a valuation verdict.
What supports the bull case
High-quality, diversified earnings base: insurance float, BNSF, energy, manufacturing and consumer businesses reduce reliance on any single economic driver. Q2 growth in energy, rail, and industrial operations partly offset weaker insurance underwriting.

Capital-allocation optionality: the large Treasury position can earn income while management waits for attractive acquisitions, public-equity investments, or repurchases. Recent buybacks and net stock purchases indicate a more active allocation posture.

Valuation is reasonable relative to Berkshire’s own history: P/B is only modestly above its five-year median, not at a historical valuation extreme.
What limits the case now
The price already reflects much of the operational improvement. Shares are at a new 52-week high, while P/B is above its historical median and the small analyst-consensus sample sits below the market price.
Succession and underwriting execution matter more now. The investment case increasingly depends on Greg Abel demonstrating durable capital-allocation discipline. GEICO underwriting trends and rail operating costs are the most material operating variables to monitor.

What would improve the setup: continued growth in operating—not mark-to-market—earnings, disciplined use of the cash reserve, and evidence that the current buyback pace is sustained only when shares trade below management’s estimate of intrinsic value.
What would weaken it: deterioration in insurance underwriting or a capital-allocation misstep large enough to offset the benefit of Berkshire’s liquidity and diversification.
