Anthropic’s IPO Sparks an AI Rally — But Can It Survive the Fed?
Anthropic’s IPO filing gave AI bulls a reason to return to the market on Monday. QQQ rose 1.11%, SPY gained 0.71%, and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 1.14%, with semiconductor and high-beta growth stocks leading the move.
The proposed Nasdaq ticker ANT puts a major question in front of investors: can a public listing for a leading AI company bring fresh capital and confidence into the wider AI sector?
Why the IPO matters
Anthropic’s filing could give investors a new benchmark for valuing AI businesses. Its revenue growth highlights the commercial demand for AI, while its enormous infrastructure commitments show how much capital is needed to compete.
Chipmakers and data-centre suppliers may benefit if AI spending continues. But the impact will not be equal across the sector. A successful IPO would not automatically make every AI-related company a good investment, particularly those struggling with debt, high operating costs or uncertain customer demand.
The Fed is the next test
The rally faces a major macroeconomic test this week. If the Fed maintains a cautious stance on inflation, Treasury yields could remain elevated and put pressure on expensive growth stocks.
The 10-year Treasury yield is particularly important because higher long-term rates can reduce the present value investors place on future earnings. That matters for AI companies whose valuations depend heavily on profits expected years from now.
What would confirm a stronger rally?
I would watch three signals:
• Yields stabilise or fall: This could ease pressure on high-growth valuations.
• The rally broadens: Strength beyond semiconductor stocks would suggest improving confidence across the market.
• Earnings support the optimism: Strong cloud growth, AI demand and credible returns on capital would help justify current spending levels.
If yields rise while only a handful of chip stocks advance, Monday’s move could prove to be a short-lived rebound rather than a broader recovery.
Anthropic’s IPO has added a new catalyst to the AI trade. But the lasting test is whether investors can see a credible path from AI demand to sustainable profits and cash flow.
