Apple Earnings: Can Strong iPhone Demand Justify Another Record High?
$Apple(AAPL)$ reports fiscal Q4 earnings tomorrow, with Wall Street expecting $113.3 billion in revenue and $1.98 EPS.
With Goldman raising its price target to $390, expectations are high. However, I think investors should look beyond the headline earnings beat. The bigger question is whether Apple’s growth can support its increasingly ambitious valuation.
1. iPhone demand is the immediate catalyst
The latest iPhone launch is central to this earnings report. Strong demand would reinforce Apple’s ability to maintain customer loyalty and generate revenue from its large installed base.
However, supply constraints could limit how much of that demand translates into actual sales. I will be watching shipment volumes and management’s comments on production capacity.
2. Margins could determine the market reaction
Rising component costs create a potential challenge. Even if revenue exceeds expectations, higher production costs could limit earnings growth.
Gross margin guidance will therefore be particularly important. Investors want to see that Apple can maintain profitability while managing supply-chain pressures.
3. Services and AI remain longer-term opportunities
Apple’s Services business provides recurring revenue and helps diversify its earnings beyond hardware upgrades.
AI is another important part of the long-term investment case. Apple has an enormous installed device base, but the opportunity must eventually translate into stronger customer engagement, upgrades and monetisation.
4. What could push Apple to a new high?
I would look for:
• Stronger-than-expected iPhone revenue.
• Resilient gross margins despite component cost pressures.
• Positive guidance for the December holiday quarter.
• Greater clarity around Apple’s AI strategy.
A strong report combined with optimistic guidance could support another rally. However, even a modest earnings miss or cautious outlook could trigger profit-taking.
My investment view
I remain positive on Apple’s long-term business, but I would not chase the shares immediately before earnings.
Apple is a quality business, but quality and valuation are two different things. At elevated expectations, the market may reward strong forward guidance more than a historical earnings beat.
For discussion purposes only.
Would you buy Apple ahead of earnings, wait for the results, or take profits if the stock reaches another all-time high?
