Shy Alphabet shares drops nore then 10%
the drop is not one bad number but a Q3 report (released after the close on 2026-10-28) that hit three nerves at once — search advertising decelerated, AI capex is still climbing, and free cash flow fell sharply. The stock gapped from $324.89 on 10-28 to $283.82 on 10-29 (−12.6% in a day), the worst session since March 2020, and has kept drifting to $278.99
What actually happened in the numbers
Item Detail
Q3 revenue ~$119.8bn, +24.2% YoY (revenue growth itself was fine)
Search ads Growth slowed to the weakest in five quarters — the core cash-cow engine
Capex Plans kept above $400bn; management flagged capex rising further next year
Free cash flow Declined sharply, partly on TPU inventory build
Buybacks Squeezed by the cash drain
Why the market reacted so violently
The narrative flipped. For two years investors rewarded AI spending; this quarter the market started asking for the return on it. Alphabet's own admission that AI-search monetisation is still low is the crux — if AI answers cannibalise traditional search clicks before monetising at the same rate, the multiple on the ad business has to come down
It was a sector-wide de-rating, not an Alphabet-only event. Amazon's and Intel's reports the same week reinforced AI-capex and chip-demand worries, and Nasdaq-100 futures fell 2.5%
Alphabet was the heaviest weight in that sell-off.
Positioning was crowded. The stock had run from ~$168 in Nov 2024 to ~$320-350 by October 2026, so a lot of good news was already priced; a "messy" quarter forced fast de-risking
Where it stands now
The 15-session move from the 2026-10-14 high of $359.40 to the 2026-10-30 low of $276.92 is −21.1%. Volume on the 10-29 gap day was 139.7m shares versus a ~39m 15-day average — roughly 3.6x, i.e. genuine institutional distribution rather than a thin air-pocket. Since then it has stabilised in a tight $277-287 band on shrinking volume (48.5m on 11-02), which reads as digestion rather than continued liquidation. Sell-side reaction was mixed: price targets were cut but most analysts stayed constructive, arguing the AI stack still supports the franchise , and at least one outlet called the shares "shockingly cheap" after the fall
What would invalidate the bear case / the bull case
Bull-side repair requires: search ad growth re-accelerating, and management showing capex converting into cloud/AI revenue (the "harvest year" claim needs proof)
Bear-side risk that could push it lower: another quarter of decelerating search revenue, or capex guidance raised again without visible FCF recovery. Also watch whether the TPU inventory build is a one-off timing item or a sign of demand mismatch.
Near-term technical reference points from the data: support around $276.9-278.8 (the recent low zone), with the pre-earnings level near $325 acting as the overhead gap-fill area.
