Chiang Mai offers a stark contrast to Singapore’s high living costs. Rent, food, and utilities are far more affordable, allowing expats like Mr. Chen to live a more comfortable life on their savings. For example, renting an apartment in Chiang Mai can cost SGD 400-700, while in Singapore, it can exceed SGD 3,000. Eating out is also significantly cheaper, with meals at local restaurants costing as little as SGD 5-10. a higher quality of life without the financial strain. A few options on South East Asia.  First Malaysia will be most convenient. So near, can drive can take bus or train, can even walk. If you adventurous, can also swim, but don't get caught.  SGD more than 3x MYR. Sedap! Next Thailand, for more bang for the buck and exotic cuisines. Tom yam goong aroi mak!  Its just above Malaysia so also convenient. Finally, "Xin Chao!" Vietnam. Another paradise with some French touch... A different taste of food with beautiful sights and sounds to rest n relax.  My choice? Pick all 3 locations and try them out. [Happy]  [Tongue]  [Love you]

It is always my dream to live in a charming, slower-paced city abroad while still earning a Singaporean dollar income ( via rent or trading). This setup could provide a unique blend of financial stability and a relaxed lifestyle. Cities like Chiang Mai in Thailand or George Town in Malaysia might offer the perfect balance, with their rich cultural heritage, safety, and laid-back atmosphere. The SGD power could provide a comfortable lifestyle in these cities, allowing you to enjoy local amenities and experiences while maintaining financial ties to Singapore. The cities' proximity to Singapore also allow easy travel back to meet up with relatives or friends and medical access. If I were to choose myself.. I would not choose those far away places. I have lived with my husband in Panama for a good 9 months & it was indeed a slower paced life, however I couldn't enjoy proper Chinese food & definitely missed my Chinese desserts back home in SG [Sad] Thus after coming back, I treasured my home country so much more, not just in terms of the food variety but everyday - it's the safety outdoors that I enjoy and my friends & family here even amidst the rising costs of living. Spending SGD Abroad: Which Dream City Would You Move To?

If your savings can cover your basic expenses, which dream city would you move to? Is the best lifestyle for Singaporeans not living in Singapore? Where does your SGD stretch the furthest? In 2024, Mr. Chen from Singapore was laid off. He had worked at Google for nearly a decade and saved up about SGD 2.56 million. After assessing his finances, he realized that even without working, his investment interests, dividends, and capital gains were more than enough to support his lifestyle. So, he took this opportunity to give himself a break — and chose to move with his wife to Chiang Mai, a city known for its low cost of living and high quality of life.Life in Chiang Mai has been incredibly relaxing. There’s no rush or stress. He wakes up every morning to cook breakfast for his wife without worry

If my savings could cover my basic expenses, I’d seriously consider moving to a slower-paced, lower-cost city where my Singapore dollars stretch further. Chiang Mai stands out — a relaxed lifestyle, great food, and a vibrant expat scene, all for much less than what I’d pay back home. A spacious apartment for SGD 580/month compared to over SGD 3,000 in Singapore? That’s hard to ignore. Honestly, the best lifestyle for Singaporeans might not be in Singapore. The high costs and constant pressure can wear you down. Living abroad in places like Portugal or Malaysia offers better balance — more time, less stress, and the same comforts, but at a fraction of the price. My dream escape would be somewhere peaceful and affordable, like Chiang Mai or southern Portugal. It’s not about giving up on Sin

In today’s world, where remote work and flexible careers are becoming the norm, many people are starting to rethink how and where they live. One smart approach is geo-arbitrage: earning in a strong currency like the Singapore dollar (SGD) while living in a country where the cost of living is much lower. Let’s face it, Singapore is a great place to work, but it’s not exactly cheap to live. But what if you could keep earning in SGD and enjoy a higher standard of living in places like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Indonesia? In cities like Chiang Mai or Da Nang, your rent, food, and daily expenses could be a fraction of what you’d spend in Singapore. Think $2 meals, $400 beachfront apartments, and affordable healthcare. Your savings grow faster, and your money goes further. This lifestyle i

Chiang Mai, Thailand Why It’s Great: Chiang Mai is a digital nomad haven with a low cost of living, reliable internet, and a relaxed vibe. It’s a short 3-hour flight from Singapore, making it easy to visit or relocate. The city blends cultural experiences (temples, festivals like Yi Peng) with modern amenities like coworking spaces (e.g., Punspace). The SGD’s strength stretches far here, offering a high quality of life. Cost of Living: SGD 700–1,400/month for a single person, including rent (SGD 300–700 for a modern one-bedroom), food (~SGD 5–10/day at local markets or street stalls), and transport (tuk-tuks or scooters at ~SGD 2–5/ride). Family Fit: Family-friendly with affordable international schools (~SGD 500–1,000/month) and safe, walkable areas like Nimmanhaemin. Parks and kid-f

I think Malaysia sounds good. Rental can be cheap and there is much to explore to spend time. There is much food variety comparable to Singapore or more at affordable prices. Language is not a barrier which means I do not have to learn a new language to get by. It is also not susceptible to many natural disasters which gives peace of mind and stability. With the all year round summer like Singapore, there is also no need to prepare clothes for the 4 seasons. Most importantly, it is close to Singapore for me to return home if there are urgent matters to settle, visit family and seek healthcare if I need to in the future. Having seen the healthcare overseas, I think Singapore is still the best and my 3Ms will make it affordable with insurance cover. Singapore is great for retirement if one h
