Getty Images

Bitcoin is at its lowest level since July 2021.

The cryptocurrency plunged almost 12% Monday to below $30,000, down more than 50% from its all-time high in November, according to CoinDesk data.

Why?

Some analysts attributed the tank to macroeconomic uncertainty. Investors have been selling off risky assets, as inflation rises at the fastest pace in 40 years, U.S. economic growth slows and the Federal Reserve tightens its monetary policy, while the Russia-Ukraine war and supply issues persist.

Though some bitcoin supporters touted it as a storage of value and a hedge against inflation, it has been trading like a risk asset for the past few months.

"The type of market participants that have stepped in over the last few years are largely these macro-trading traditional funds. They are trading bitcoins the way that they trade tech stocks, although a lot of aspects of bitcoin are inherently viewed as risk-off by crypto-native people," Will Clemente, lead insights analyst at bitcoin mining company Blockware Solutions, told MarketWatch in an interview.

"Bitcoin's correlation to traditional markets has just kind of been in the driver's seat lately," Clemente added. The 30-day rolling correlation between bitcoin and the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 hit an all-time high of about 0.8 on Monday, according to crypto data provider Kaiko Research.

The market currently views both bitcoin and the Nasdaq as "long duration, interest-rate-sensitive risky assets," Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets wrote in Monday notes.

"If the Fed is pouring gasoline on markets in the form of quantitative easing, that's bullish. If they are hosing down the fire as they transition from arsonist to firefighter, that's bearish," Donnelly wrote.

Since March, the Fed has been holding its balance sheet steady at nearly $9 trillion by reinvesting proceeds of maturing securities. The central bank said last Wednesday that it will reduce the size of its balance sheet by $47.5 billion a month for three months starting in June and ramping up to $95 billion a month starting in September.

Jay Hatfield, chief investment officer at Infrastructure Capital Management, attributed bitcoin's high return during 2020 and 2021 partly to the Fed's quantitative easing policy. "We had an unprecedented increase in Fed liquidity, buying $120 billion a month of securities. And now we will have an erratic shift to a reduction in liquidity for $95 billion per month," Hatfield said.

"Year to date, bitcoin had been holding up relatively well compared to some of its equity-related proxies, but once we broke $38,000, a large portion of holders were underwater, creating selling pressure," Martha Reyes, head of research at crypto exchange Bequant, told MarketWatch via email.

Investors are also concerned that TerraUSD, a dollar-pegged algorithmic stablecoin, has fallen below $1. The cryptocurrency, which is designed to trade at $1, was trading at around 80 cents on Binance late Monday.

Backers of the Terra ecosystem have voted to issue $1.5 billion in loans, with half in bitcoin, to back the cryptocurrency. Do Kwon, founder of Terraform Labs, which powers the blockchain, earlier pledged to purchase as much as $10 billion in bitcoin to support the stablecoin.

","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Crypto Crash Continues; Why Has Bitcoin Fallen 55% over the past 6 Months?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCrypto Crash Continues; Why Has Bitcoin Fallen 55% over the past 6 Months?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-10 10:01 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
'They are trading bitcoins the way that they trade tech stocks,' one analyst saysBitcoin prices have fallen nearly 20% over the past five days alone. The 30-day rolling correlation between bitcoin and the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 hit an all-time high of about 0.8 on Monday, according to crypto data provider Kaiko Research.The market currently views both bitcoin and the Nasdaq as \"long duration, interest-rate-sensitive risky assets,\" Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets wrote in Monday notes.\"If the Fed is pouring gasoline on markets in the form of quantitative easing, that's bullish. If they are hosing down the fire as they transition from arsonist to firefighter, that's bearish,\" Donnelly wrote.Since March, the Fed has been holding its balance sheet steady at nearly $9 trillion by reinvesting proceeds of maturing securities. The central bank said last Wednesday that it will reduce the size of its balance sheet by $47.5 billion a month for three months starting in June and ramping up to $95 billion a month starting in September.Jay Hatfield, chief investment officer at Infrastructure Capital Management, attributed bitcoin's high return during 2020 and 2021 partly to the Fed's quantitative easing policy. \"We had an unprecedented increase in Fed liquidity, buying $120 billion a month of securities. And now we will have an erratic shift to a reduction in liquidity for $95 billion per month,\" Hatfield said.\"Year to date, bitcoin had been holding up relatively well compared to some of its equity-related proxies, but once we broke $38,000, a large portion of holders were underwater, creating selling pressure,\" Martha Reyes, head of research at crypto exchange Bequant, told MarketWatch via email.Investors are also concerned that TerraUSD, a dollar-pegged algorithmic stablecoin, has fallen below $1. The cryptocurrency, which is designed to trade at $1, was trading at around 80 cents on Binance late Monday.Backers of the Terra ecosystem have voted to issue $1.5 billion in loans, with half in bitcoin, to back the cryptocurrency. Do Kwon, founder of Terraform Labs, which powers the blockchain, earlier pledged to purchase as much as $10 billion in bitcoin to support the stablecoin.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"MBTmain":0.9,"GBTC":0.9,"PYPL":0.9,"SQ":0.9,"COIN":0.9,"BTCmain":0.9,"XBTmain":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9068326669,"gmtCreate":1651721777683,"gmtModify":1676534956951,"author":{"id":"3584526107526448","authorId":"3584526107526448","name":"Darrenearns","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/331a2c5d91e09f35ee2268904d1a1784","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584526107526448","authorIdStr":"3584526107526448"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Just add to provisional list. what he found helps to solidify the bull-case.“We noted broadening traction among government agencies, beyond Defense and into agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Energy,” said the 5-star analyst. “We expect this to drive 10-20%+ annual USG growth for the next few years.”Spanning across agencies including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and U.S. Special Operations Command, the Department of Defense (DoD) still represents the biggest revenue generator, with Twigg estimating the segment accounts for between 50%-77% of Palantir’s U.S. government revenue.Given the DOD’s requested discretionary budgets are anticipated to rise by 5% in FY2022 and by 4% in FY2023, Twigg thinks the “high DOD exposure could be a positive” for the business. What’s more, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could act as a “catalyst” for the DOD to upgrade its technologies and be ready for any “future potential conflicts.”But as noted above, Palantir has gained a foothold in other departments too.For example, in 2020, the company’s U.S. government revenue rose by 91% year-over-year to $474 million from $248 million. However, at the same time, revenue generated from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) increased by 892%, from ~$6.4 million in 2019 to ~$56.9 million, with the segment accounting for 12% of 2020 USG revenue compared to 3% in 2019. As such, Health and Human Services takes second place in the revenue generating ranks, with the Department of Homeland Security, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, Department of Energy, and Department of Justice following behind.So, promising for Palantir’s USG business, but what are the implications for investors? Twigg’s rating stays an Overweight (i.e. Buy), yet the price target is nudged higher – from $15 to $16. Should the analyst’s thesis go according to plan, investors will be sitting on one-year returns of 32%. Twigg is one of the Street’s PLTR bulls, but most remain skeptics; the stock’s Hold consensus rating is based on 5 Holds, 3 Buys and 1 Sell. However, going by the $15.06 average price target, the stock is anticipated to climb 24% higher over the coming year.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"PLTR":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1840,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"followers","isTTM":true}
