Plug Power Soars on Tax Credit Easing, But Challenges Remain
Plug Power ( $Plug Power(PLUG)$ ), a leading player in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry, experienced a significant surge in its stock price following the U.S. Department of the Treasury's release of final rules for the clean hydrogen production tax credit established by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The new rules allow hydrogen produced using natural gas in conjunction with carbon capture systems to qualify for a tax credit. Additionally, hydrogen made with up to 200 megawatts of nuclear power from certain plants can also become eligible for the break.
Furthermore, firms can obtain a tax credit through 2029 by demonstrating that their hydrogen production is powered by renewables on an annual basis. Starting in 2030, they will need to show that they are using renewables hour by hour to produce their hydrogen to qualify for the tax credit.
Market Reaction and Performance
Plug shares soared 19.77% on Monday, extending the gains from Friday when the news of the relaxed tax credit criteria was announced. This rally has propelled PLUG's stock price up by 41.5% in the first few days of 2025.

-
