EWS iShares MSCI Singapore ETF - An Alternative Way To Invest In The Singapore Market

🌟🌟🌟Recently $iShares MSCI Singapore ETF(EWS)$ reached a new high at  USD 25.12.    This can be attributed to the positive sentiments in the Singapore market, driven by strong economic indicators and robust corporate earnings reports.    This has resulted in this ETF hitting new highs, reflecting a broader confidence in the Singapore economy.

Why I Invest in EWS

Investing in EWS is an attractive choice for me due to several reasons:

1.  Broad Diversified Exposure to the Singapore Market

EWS is designed to track the performance of the MSCI Singapore Index which represents a wide range of Large and Mid Cap Singapore companies across different sectors.  This means that in just 1 trade, I gain a diversified exposure to  a strong Singapore market without having to pick individual stocks.  This diversification can help reduce company specific risks and create a more stable long term portfolio.

2.  Access to the Dynamic Singapore Market

Singapore is a key financial and business hub in Asia.  Investing in EWS gives me direct access to Singapore's financial, real estate, industrial and consumer sectors.  These sectors play an important role in Singapore's economy.

3.  Cost Efficiency and Liquidity

EWS offers a low expense ratio of 0.50%.  This means that less of my investment returns is eaten up by management fees over time.   In addition to that EWS is traded in the NYSE stock exchange which provides greater liquidity compared to trading in the Singapore Stock Exchange.

4.  Transparency and Ease of Trading

EWS follows a passive investment strategy that closely track an established index.  It also simplifies the investing process as there is no need for in depth research into individual Singapore companies., saving me time and effort.

5.  EWS's holdings include SEA and Grab

Unlike the STI ETF $STI ETF(ES3.SI)$  EWS holdings include $Sea Ltd(SE)$  and $Grab Holdings(GRAB)$  which can be considered growth stocks.

SEA Ltd

SEA Ltd and Grab Holdings are 2 of the fastest growth companies in Singapore.

SEA is a leading global consumer Internet company founded in Singapore by Forrest Li with its mission to better the lives of consumers and small businesses with technology.   SEA has 3 business divisions - Garena, Shopee and Monee.

Garena is a leading online games developer and publisher with a global footprint across more than 130 markets.

Shopee is a leading e commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

Monee, formerly known as SeaMoney, is a  leading digital payments and financial services provider in Southeast Asia.

SEA's share price is up 32% year todate and in 2024, it has skyrocketed by 115%!

Grab Holdings

Grab is the developer of a super app for ride hailing, food delivery and digital payment services on mobile devices that operates in Southeast Asia.

Grab has a dominant position in South East Asia as it operates across the deliveries, mobility and digital financial services sectors in over 500 cities in 8 countries in South East Asia.

While Grab's share price has not gone up as much as SEA, it is up 3% year todate and 38% in 2024.

Final Thoughts

Investing in EWS has been a rewarding experience for me as it has given me capital appreciation in addition to dividend payouts.  The current dividend yield is 3.84% paid every 6 months.

EWS provides me with a compelling gateway to the Singapore Market as it offers a broad exposure via the MSCI Singapore index  and fits into my diversified portfolio.
