Significant Pressure In Stock Market But Limited Impact
The stock market faced significant pressure today, with a limited impact from Target's (TGT) earnings report.
The major indices experienced declines, especially small-cap Russell 2000 (-2.8%). UnitedHealth Group (UNH) dropped 5.8% following an HSBC downgrade and a report about nursing home practices, which the company disputed.
The broader market decline was reflected in a near 9-to-1 ratio of decliners to advancers at the NYSE and a 4-to-1 margin at Nasdaq.
The MBA Mortgage Applications Index decreased by 5.1% as both refinance and purchase applications fell due to rising mortgage rates.
Ten Out Of Eleven S&P 500 Sector Ended In The Red
Ten out of eleven S&P 500 sectors fell, with real estate, health care, financials, consumer discretionary, and utilities seeing significant losses.
Communication services was the only sector to rise (+0.7%), helped by Alphabet's (GOOG) gains.
Yield Rose Sharply Driven By Inflation Concerns
We saw the treasury yields making significant rise, this is driven by inflation concerns linked to UK's hot CPI data and budget deficit worries.
The 10-year note yield rose to 4.60% and the 30-year bond yield rose to 5.09%. A $16 billion 20-yr bond auction showed weak demand, further increasing yields to 5.047%.
Stocks To Watch
$Palo Alto Networks(PANW)$ announced its goal to achieve $15 billion in annual recurring revenue by fiscal year 2030, driven by its AI-powered platformization strategy. The company reported a 34% year-over-year increase in next-generation security ARR, with significant contributions from AI-driven products like XSIAM and SASE. This strategic focus on AI and platformization positions Palo Alto Networks as a leader in cybersecurity innovation.
Even with this positive news, PANW suffered a decline due to significant pressure in the broader market, now the bears might be back in control, though RSI still show positive momentum, and this might be a good chance to get into PANW for long term strategy.
One of the important enablers for AI on the cybersecurity, PANW have shown pretty good recurring revenue and this trend is set to improve.
$Rio Tinto PLC(RIO)$ received approval for its $2.5 billion Rincon lithium project in Argentina, marking the first mining project under the country's new investment incentive plan. This development is expected to enhance Argentina's position in the global lithium market, crucial for the growing demand in electric vehicle production.
$Micron Technology(MU)$ priced an upsized $350 million offering of convertible senior notes due 2030. The increased offering size reflects strong investor demand, supporting Micron's financial strategy amid ongoing market volatility.
$Medtronic PLC(MDT)$ plans to spin off its diabetes business into a standalone company, aiming to focus on its core segments. The spin-off is expected to enhance growth prospects for the diabetes unit, which generated $2.5 billion in sales last fiscal year.
With earnings better than the previous year quarter, MDT spin-off might be able to further boost its position in the diabetes drugs sector, diabetes is an issue for the modern economics, I believe most economics have suffered certain level of losses due to the management of diabetes, and this is going to be a long process. Patients with diabetes are getting younger in fact.
Based on the technicals, this might not yet be time to load up this stock as the bears are in control and it have lost key 50-day and 200 -day level, so we need to see if the bulls can attempt to push back for a daily uptrend to regain control, remember that MDT have been experiencing a negative momentum since the previous earnings, and this had not changed after the 21 May earnings as well.
$Uber(UBER)$ unveiled a scaled AI logistics network for its freight business, with Colgate-Palmolive as an early adopter. The AI-driven platform aims to optimize logistics operations, showcasing Uber's commitment to integrating advanced technologies in its services.
Ford Motor (F) will allow Nissan to use part of its EV battery plant in Kentucky, reflecting strategic adjustments in its electric vehicle plans. This collaboration could help Nissan mitigate U.S. tariffs, while Ford continues to refine its EV strategy amid financial challenges.
Summary
I think we might continue to see significant pressure coming from the possible renewed inflation concern, but there are areas where we still can find opportunities, like crypto, as investors are getting hyped up on how next week Bitcoin conference in Las Vegas might bring.
And we will be expecting some AI names earnings as well last week, like Nvidia, C3.ai and Salesforce on 28 May, this is an area where we might see some turnaround if Nvidia earnings surprise and turned a surge in share price.
