The Fall of USD: Gold, Stablecoins, and Bitcoin, Who Will Shape the Future?

Against the backdrop of soaring fiscal deficits and persistent inflationary pressures, the U.S. dollar's reign as the world’s reserve currency is facing its most serious challenge in history. Meanwhile, a quiet competition is unfolding among multiple forms of money.

1. The Return of Gold: PT to $3700! From Safe-Haven Asset to Legal Tender?

Last week, a piece of legislation in Florida brought the long-dormant idea of a gold and silver standard back into the spotlight.

The new law formally recognizes gold and silver as legal tender in the state and establishes a legal framework for taxation, custody, and payment. Scheduled to take effect in July 2026, this marks a substantial shift for precious metals from “investment assets” to actual mediums of exchange within the payment system.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pointed out that the US dollar's purchasing power has continuously declined over the past decade, while gold has nearly tripled in value. Goldman Sachs Research predicts $Gold - main 2508(GCmain)$ will rise to $3,700 a troy ounce by the end of 2025 as central banks buy many tonnes of the precious metal every month.

2. Bitcoin: Speculative Bubble or Digital Gold?

Bitcoin recently surged past $110k. Often hailed as “digital gold,” it is praised for its limited supply and censorship resistance, positioning it as the ultimate hedge against inflation and monetary manipulation. However, its extreme volatility has hindered its adoption as a practical payment medium or stable store of value in the real economy.

3. Stablecoins: A Digital Lifeline for the Dollar and US Treasuries?

Stablecoins are deeply intertwined with Bitcoin’s rise.

In 2014, Tether launched the Realcoin project (later USDT) to solve Bitcoin’s volatility by introducing a dollar-pegged digital currency. However, Tether has faced criticism over opaque reserves and regulatory issues. In response, $Circle Internet Corp.(CRCL)$ and $Coinbase Global, Inc.(COIN)$ jointly launched USDC, fully backed by USD reserves and committed to monthly audits and transparent disclosures, earning both market trust and regulatory support.

US Treasury Secretary Bessent has made the strategic stance clear:

“We will use stablecoins to preserve the dollar’s status as the world’s primary reserve currency.”

According to the latest SEC filing, Circle has raised its IPO target from $600 million to nearly $900 million, reflecting strong capital market confidence in its role as a “digital dollar infrastructure” provider.
Circle earns revenue from interest on its holdings of U.S. Treasuries and cash reserves — totaling $558 million in Q1 2025 alone — demonstrating robust profitability.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you believe asset tokenization is the direction of the future?

  • Do you support Florida’s return to a gold and silver standard?

  • Is gold still the most reliable store of value?

  • Would you participate in Circle’s IPO?

gold is something to keep as "insurance". when in "crisis", gold will be valuable.

Confidence with the U.S. dollars is a bit shakened these days. However, even with de-dollarization, (that is, shrinking influence the U.S. dollar has on the economies of other countries) as countries aim to reduce their dependency, the dollar is still by far the most widely held reserve currency. Mand any countries have accumulated very much of it it is still the most stable and liquid form of exchange. There is truly no realistic alternatives to replace the dollar anytime soon. While I believe that tokenisation is the future, I don’t think it will happen even in the next 10 years. It is hard for countries to move away from the USD as their reserves unless the USD crumbles significantly. It is still a major currency. Bitcoin and Stablecoins are promising but lacks transparency and governance. They need widespread adoption as a means of currency, superior cybersecurity measures to give the masses peace of mind and the backing of global leaders. Once these are tackled, it will rise, probably as an alternative as various governments attempt to spread their risk. It will be a long time before it can fully overtake the USD as the world’s reserve. Gold is the all time gold standard as it is the basis of most paper currencies. However, Florida’s move will cause gold and silver prices to rise, which may further weaken demand for USD. For now, I won’t participate in circle’s IPO. I would prefer to watch the price action first and it doesn’t run away from USD!

I think asset tokenization will be the direction of the future. Gold, for me, no doubt is the most reliable store of value. I do support florida's return to a golf and silver standard like moving back to ancient trade time [LOL]. Circle's IPO looks interesting, and I would participate if I got extra money.

Gold and bitcoin are now reserve currencies for the us federal reserve. The increase in us treasury debt & uncertainty of us president makes the certainty of gold & bitcoin more appealing

With increased global adoption and usage, BTC is set to take over Gold in my opinion. Hence, I won't be buying into Gold stocks. Only buying physical Gold as jewellery, that's about it.

I believe to certain extent that asset tokenization is the direction for the future. I do not support Florida's return to a gold and silver standard. I don't think gold is still the most reliable store of value. I would not participate in Circle's IPO due to the lack of knowledge at this stage.

It is better to invest today than tomorrow. I only realised Gold is a safe heaven to hedge USD this year. I don't dare to chase high gold prices, lucky I  found a Singapore listed Gold Mine company $CNMC Goldmine(5TP.SI)$ , I started investment in it on 24/03/2025, I still get gain, even today it is not too late to invest. This company forwards P/E is less than 10. Singapore's stocks valuation are insane, many SGX listed companies volunteered to delist in recent years.

Asset tokenization is widely seen as the future of finance, enabling greater liquidity and accessibility, with institutional adoption on the rise. Florida’s move to recognize gold and silver as legal tender reflects growing skepticism about fiat currency, though practical use remains limited. Gold continues to be a reliable store of value amid global instability, recently hitting new highs. As for Circle’s IPO, its profitability and growing USDC adoption make it appealing, though competition with Tether and regulatory risks remain key considerations.

Bitcoin is now part of the us federal reserve in addition to gold. The reduced importance of usd due to us government debt makes gold & bitcoin more valuable
