H1 Recap: Which Opportunities Do You Regret Missing the Most?
We’re already halfway through the year! Let’s review the key investment opportunities from the first half of the year based on risk, difficulty, and return.
Did you catch any of them or did they slip through your fingers?
1. Market indices after the tariff-triggered crash
Difficulty: ⭐️ Risk: ⭐️ Return: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
On April 7, following the tariff announcement, nearly all asset classes dropped. $NASDAQ(.IXIC)$ fell to around 14,000 but has since rebounded to over 20,000. If you bought the S&P 500 instead, it also climbed back close to its all-time high.
2. $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ after DeepSeek-fueled selloff
Difficulty: ⭐️⭐️ Risk: ⭐️⭐️ Return: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
After DeepSeek went viral, the market began doubting AI demand. Nvidia dropped 16.97% in a single day.
From January to early May, Nvidia traded below $120 for months. If you bought and held during that extended window, the stock has now surged past $156—delivering significant gains over three months.
3. $Xiaomi Corp.(XIACY)$ dip after the car crash incident
Difficulty: ⭐️⭐️ Risk: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Return: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In April, after the highway crash incident, Xiaomi dropped to a low of 36 HKD. However, the fundamentals remained intact. There was a more than two-week window to buy the dip. Today, after the new car launch, Xiaomi has hit a new high of over 60 HKD, and its ADR market cap is approaching $200 billion.
4. $POP MART(09992)$ early in the year
Difficulty: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Risk: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Return: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
During chats with friends, many mentioned they were obsessed with Pop Mart’s blind boxes, and Labubu had already gained popularity last year.
If with a bit of early research, buying Pop Mart at 120 HKD would have resulted in a 100% return by now.
5. Buying $Circle Internet Corp.(CRCL)$ on IPO day
Difficulty: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Risk: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Return: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Circle, the first publicly listed stablecoin company, soared 168% on debut and closed at $83. Even if you didn’t get IPO shares but bought on the first day, the price has since multiplied 2.5x, peaking at 3.5x.
However, the rapid rise and intense volatility made it difficult for most investors to hold through the swings.
Aside from these 5, there were other major plays:
$Gold - main 2508(GCmain)$ at $2,600 earlier this year; $AppLovin Corporation(APP)$ and $UnitedHealth(UNH)$ after a short report; Meme and rocket stocks that kept surging
Which did you miss? Which did you nail?
Some investors say, "I always seem to miss the great opportunities and end up picking the losers instead."
If you didn’t catch those first two low-difficulty plays, maybe it’s time to reflect.

However I did not miss Nvidia $NVIDIA(NVDA)$. I saw the architecture of the future being built and its dominant position in specialised GPUs. I held firm. Nvidia has just hit its all time high and it has rewarded my conviction.
This is not just about stock picking. It is understanding why some stocks pay off - Vision, Execution and Timing. Palantir showed what I missed but Nvidia proved what I knew. Both taught me something.
Markets do not wait but they always teach. And half time isn't the end. It is just the pause before the next play.

I did not buy ansdaq directly but i bought the world index ETF as it fits my risk appetite of not over concentrating on a single country or asset.
My greatest regret was not believing and buying circle. I didn’t believe in it as the business model did not sound sound enough and not independent of the typical market assets that I would expect of it.
I also regret not taking the opportunity to buy Xiaomi though it wouldn’t be this year. Last year would have been a great opportunity to buy Xiaomi but alas, I don’t have a crystal ball.[LOL]
but i bought it again at 353 and now its 180.
really cannot play tiger. tiger is evil.
Looking forward to catching new opportunities
