On July 2, Taobao Flash Sale $Alibaba(BABA)$ announced a 50 billion RMB subsidy plan, aiming to directly support consumers and merchants over the next 12 months. On the first day alone, orders for coffee and beverages surged by over 150% compared to the previous day.

Order volume across platforms remains at a high level, with Meituan and Taobao Flash Sale averaging more than 200 million orders per day combined.

As the subsidies continue to intensify, consumers are hoarding products—some users even placed single orders for 24 cans of Coke.

Many Gen Z users joke that the greatest windfall of their time is the current food delivery war: 5 RMB for a cup of milk tea, a full meal for a little over 10 RMB. On weekends, subsidies increase even further—some people are stocking their fridge with milk tea.

Beyond food delivery, past “era windfalls” included the self-media boom during COVID, the internet tech giant boom of the 2010s, the entrepreneurial wave of the 1990s, and even the work and housing allocations our parents' generation received decades ago.

Since Taobao entered the food delivery war, $Morgan Stanley(MS)$ has lowered Alibaba’s price target to $150, citing food delivery and flash commerce as short-term profit drags. Alibaba’s stock has been falling, recently dropping to around $100.

Meanwhile, beverage stocks are on the rise, $CHABAIDAO(02555)$ is up 12% this month, and $NAYUKI(02150)$ has risen 33%.
