The rally appears to be driven by a fundamental improvement, but a 19.6% one-day gain likely also reflects sentiment and momentum.
Why this is more than just hype:
US$2.8 billion of new multi-year AI cloud contracts is tangible business, not merely an AI announcement.
IREN increased its 2026 AI Cloud annualised run-rate revenue target from US$3.7 billion to over US$4 billion, with about 85% of that target already under contract, giving investors much better revenue visibility.
The customer list includes major names such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, Perplexity, Together AI, Figure AI and Fluidstack, suggesting demand comes from credible counterparties rather than speculative startups.
Around 45% of GPU capital expenditure for recent deployments is covered by customer prepayments, reducing financing risk, which has been one of investors' biggest concerns.
Why investors should still be cautious:
Much of the guidance is based on annualised run-rate (ARR) rather than current recognised revenue. The infrastructure still needs to be commissioned, tested and accepted by customers before all of that revenue is realised.
IREN remains a high-capex growth company. It must continue executing large GPU deployments on schedule while avoiding cost overruns.
AI infrastructure stocks are currently trading at rich multiples. Even strong execution may not prevent short-term volatility if market sentiment towards AI cools.
My view
This looks more like a genuine valuation re-rating than a pure sentiment spike, because the catalyst is backed by signed contracts, improved revenue visibility and reduced funding risk.
However, the size of the one-day move is probably amplified by momentum traders and short covering. After a near-20% jump, it would not be surprising to see profit-taking or consolidation before the next leg higher.
For long-term investors, the key questions are no longer whether IREN can win customers. Instead, they are:
1. Can it deliver its GPU capacity on time?
2. Can it maintain attractive margins as AI cloud competition intensifies?
3. Can it convert its contracted ARR into sustainable free cash flow?
If those three remain on track, the company's transition from Bitcoin miner to AI infrastructure platform becomes much more credible than it was a year ago.
