NetEase Earnings Preview: Gaming Under Pressure, What Will Drive Growth?

NetEase is set to release its second-quarter earnings report after the Hong Kong market closes on August 20. According to analyst estimates, NetEase's Q2 2026 revenue is expected to reach RMB 29.447 billion, with adjusted EPS estimated at RMB 3.118.

In terms of stock performance, NetEase experienced a notable decline at the beginning of the year, before recovering amid volatility from March onward. With the earnings release approaching, market attention is increasingly focused on the performance of its core gaming business and the company's future growth drivers.

In terms of revenue structure, NetEase has four major business segments: Games & Related Value-Added Services, Youdao, Cloud Music, and Innovative Businesses and Others. Games & Related Value-Added Services remains the company's largest revenue contributor, but analysts expect revenue from the segment to decline in the second quarter. Meanwhile, revenue from Youdao, Cloud Music, and Innovative Businesses and Others is expected to increase.

CLSA expects NetEase's game business to remain stable in the second quarter, with total revenue projected to grow 6.5% year over year. The broker maintains an "Outperform" rating, noting that core titles such as Fantasy Westward Journey and Eggy Party have remained stable and could continue to support game revenue in the second quarter.

However, Bloomberg analysts believe that higher marketing expenses could weigh on NetEase's net profit growth, potentially slowing it to single-digit percentage in 2026. At the same time, intensifying competition in the gaming industry and increasingly saturated user demand are creating additional pressure on the company's ability to sustain growth in gaming. The market will be watching closely to see whether new games can gain traction and whether Cloud Music can make a greater contribution to overall growth.

From a valuation perspective, NetEase's P/E ratio is 18.86, around the middle of its five-year historical range. $NTES(09999)$ $NetEase(NTES)$

There is one core issue: NetEase’s pace of new game releases has fallen short of expectations in recent years. No matter how resilient its existing titles may be, without new games stepping in to become the next growth drivers, it will be difficult for NetEase’s gaming business to sustain long-term earnings growth. From this perspective, the outlook heading into this earnings report is not particularly optimistic.

18.86x PE feels fair, not cheap enough for much cushion. I care more about whether new games can offset the ad spend drag
