Why Okta’s AI-Agent Opportunity Must Reverse Its Revenue Deceleration
$Okta Inc.(OKTA)$ reports fiscal second-quarter results after the August 26 close. Management argues that artificial-intelligence agents will create a new class of digital identities requiring authentication, permissions and governance. That opportunity is plausible, but investors first need evidence that it can prevent growth from falling into single digits.
For the first fiscal quarter ended April 30 and reported May 28, revenue and subscription revenue increased 11% to $765 million and $750 million, respectively. Remaining performance obligations rose 16% to $4.72 billion, while current RPO increased 12% to $2.50 billion. Free cash flow reached $271 million, equivalent to 35% of revenue. Okta’s official first-quarter release provides the results and guidance.
The bullish thesis is independence. Okta can manage identities across Microsoft, Google, Amazon and many specialised applications rather than favouring one technology ecosystem. As companies deploy AI agents, each agent may need limited access to specific data and actions. Identity governance becomes important because an autonomous account with excessive permissions can cause damage more quickly than a human employee.
Large-enterprise demand, governance products and better sales productivity supported the first quarter. Okta also produced GAAP operating income and substantial free cash flow, showing that the business has moved beyond growth at any cost. A $2.59 billion cash and short-term-investment balance provides strategic flexibility.
The bearish issue is deceleration. Management guided for second-quarter revenue of $790–$794 million, representing only 9% growth, and full-year growth of 9%–10%. Employee-based pricing is sensitive to weak hiring, while Microsoft can bundle identity capabilities into broader enterprise agreements. Security incidents also carry unusual reputational risk for a company whose product is the access-control layer.
Okta’s August 26 webcast is confirmed on its official events page. OKTA closed at $135.14 on August 21 after falling from $143.24 on August 17. It lost 5.0% on August 20 and traded from $131.69 to $137.11 on Friday. Support lies near $131–$133, then $120–$125; resistance is $140–$145 and $149–$150. The short-term trend remains weak beneath $145.
If Okta rebounds after results but fails below $145 while revenue guidance remains in single digits, a 30–45-day $155/$165 bear call spread could position the short strike above resistance. The live short call should be near 0.10–0.20 delta with workable liquidity. A close above $150 with accelerating cRPO invalidates the structure. Maximum loss equals the $10 width minus credit.
The evidence leans neutral. Cash generation, governance adoption and the AI-agent opportunity are constructive, while single-digit guidance and competitive bundling limit conviction. The view would become bullish if cRPO and revenue reaccelerate; it would turn bearish if guidance falls, large-customer demand weakens or the stock loses $120.
