AI is running into a power problem.
AI chip-driven electricity demand is projected to surge to roughly 315 GW globally by 2033, more than +1,100% above 2025 levels.
The US alone could account for around 200 GW, or nearly 64% of this new demand.
And it's not just total consumption. AI data centers can experience massive power swings when hundreds of thousands of GPUs ramp up simultaneously, pushing electricity usage far above normal design levels.
That puts additional strain on batteries, generators, cooling systems, transformers, and other critical infrastructure, potentially driving higher maintenance and replacement costs.
The AI boom isn't just a chip story. A massive buildout of new energy and power infrastructure is going to be needed to support it.
