SoundHound AI Earnings Preview: Should You Buy Before the Report?

$SoundHound AI Inc(SOUN)$

SoundHound AI is set to release its quarterly financial results after the market closes on February 27, 2025. Investors are eager to determine whether they should buy the stock ahead of the earnings announcement. Adding to the anticipation, the company’s stock recently plummeted by approximately 30% following Nvidia’s decision to divest its shares in SoundHound AI. This makes the upcoming earnings report even more critical for investors.

In this video, I'll address whether you should consider buying the stock before earnings, provide a preview of what to expect from SoundHound AI’s financial report, and share my intrinsic value calculation using a discounted cash flow (DCF) model to estimate the stock’s fair value.

Revenue Growth and Business Expansion

In its most recent earnings report, SoundHound AI posted an 89% year-over-year revenue increase to $25 million. However, this growth was largely driven by acquisitions rather than organic expansion. The company recently acquired Amelia, a leader in enterprise conversational AI, broadening its reach into finance, insurance, and healthcare. Previously, SoundHound AI was heavily focused on the restaurant and automotive industries, so this acquisition diversifies its revenue streams and reduces concentration risk.

On the restaurant front, the company has secured agreements with seven of the world’s top 20 quick-service restaurant brands, with several already using its AI-driven phone and drive-thru solutions. AI-powered drive-thrus offer significant advantages, improving order accuracy, enhancing customer experience, and providing upsell opportunities—all while reducing labor costs and management challenges.

In the automotive sector, SoundHound AI’s voice recognition technology is now integrated into Lancia vehicles in Europe, alongside existing partnerships with Stellantis brands such as DS Automobiles, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Opel, Citroën, and Alfa Romeo. The company is also expanding into India, where Kia is adding Hindi-language capabilities to multiple models, with 10 additional regional languages to follow.

Financial Risks and Cash Burn

Despite strong revenue growth, SoundHound AI faces significant financial risks due to its ongoing losses. As of September 30, 2024, the company held $136 million in cash. However, it burned through $76 million in the first nine months of the year, up from $54 million in the same period the prior year—an alarming trend. At this rate, SoundHound AI is spending roughly $8 million per month, giving it a limited financial runway of 15 to 20 months unless it can improve cash flow or raise additional capital.

Cash Flow

SoundHound AI has demonstrated strong revenue growth, but its cash burn remains a major concern for investors. As of September 30, 2024, the company held a cash balance of $136 million. However, it has burned through $76 million in the first nine months of 2024, up from $54 million in the same period the previous year. This means SoundHound is currently losing around $8 million per month, giving it only 15 to 20 months of financial runway at this rate, unless it can improve its cash flow or raise additional capital.

Despite its growth, the company has yet to show signs of stabilizing its cash flow, and losses are accelerating, which raises questions about its path to profitability. Investors will be closely watching the upcoming earnings report to see if management provides any clear plans to slow down the cash burn or improve profitability. This will be a crucial factor in determining whether the company can become cash-flow positive in the near future or if additional funding will be necessary to sustain its operations.

2025 Outlook and Profitability Concerns

SoundHound has raised its revenue guidance for 2025 to a range of $155 million to $175 million, with a midpoint of $165 million. While this forecast shows continued growth, investors will need to assess whether the company can meet these targets and whether the focus on expansion at the cost of profitability will impact future revenue stability. Additionally, the potential for higher operating costs and ongoing cash burn could affect the bottom line, even if revenue growth continues.

SoundHound AI vs. Peers: A Competitive Analysis

When comparing SoundHound AI to its peers in the conversational AI and voice recognition industry, several factors—such as revenue growth, market positioning, financial health, and technological advancements—come into play. Below is an overview of how SoundHound stacks up against some of its key competitors.

SoundHound AI vs. Nuance Communications (acquired by Microsoft)

Technology Focus:

SoundHound AI: Primarily focused on voice recognition and conversational AI, with applications in restaurants and the automotive sector. It has diversified into finance, insurance, and healthcare following its acquisition of Amelia.

Nuance Communications: Known for its advanced AI-driven speech recognition and natural language processing (NLP) technologies, Nuance serves a broad range of industries, including healthcare, customer service, and automotive. Its recent acquisition by Microsoft strengthens its position in the enterprise sector, especially in healthcare with Microsoft’s cloud capabilities.

Revenue Growth:

SoundHound AI: Posted 89% year-over-year growth, largely driven by its acquisition strategy and focus on verticals like quick-service restaurants and automotive.

Nuance Communications: Had steady revenue growth leading up to its acquisition by Microsoft, with substantial contributions from healthcare, including medical transcription and clinical documentation. Its post-acquisition growth is expected to accelerate under Microsoft's backing.

Market Position:

SoundHound AI: Strong in the restaurant and automotive sectors, with growing partnerships in other verticals. However, its market share is smaller compared to Nuance's established presence, particularly in healthcare.

Nuance Communications: A more established player in the industry with a dominant presence in healthcare and strong integrations across cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure.

SoundHound AI vs. Alexa (Amazon) and Google Assistant

Technology Focus:

SoundHound AI: Specializes in voice recognition technology for businesses (restaurants, automotive, etc.), offering tailored solutions to improve customer service and operational efficiency.

Alexa and Google Assistant: Both Amazon and Google provide consumer-focused virtual assistants, widely adopted in smart home devices, mobile apps, and smart speakers. They have more general-use capabilities, with significant investments in machine learning and voice AI.

Revenue Growth:

SoundHound AI: While it has demonstrated impressive growth, especially from its acquisitions, it is still a smaller player compared to Amazon and Google, which dominate the virtual assistant market.

Amazon and Google: Both companies are heavily invested in AI and voice technologies. Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant continue to see strong adoption, contributing to their larger revenues, with a heavy reliance on cloud services (AWS and Google Cloud).

Market Position:

SoundHound AI: Is carving out a niche in enterprise applications with industry-specific solutions, especially in drive-thru and in-car technology. However, its market share is much smaller compared to Amazon and Google, which have near-total dominance in the consumer space.

Amazon and Google: They have a massive market presence, especially in the consumer sector. While they do have some presence in enterprise solutions, their focus remains largely on general consumer applications and cloud integration.

SoundHound AI vs. Apple’s Siri

Technology Focus:

SoundHound AI: Focuses on enterprise-driven solutions, such as AI-powered drive-thrus and in-car technology, helping businesses improve operations and customer experiences.

Siri: Apple’s virtual assistant is integrated across its consumer devices, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. It provides voice-activated control for everyday tasks but has limited focus on business and enterprise solutions compared to SoundHound.

Revenue Growth:

SoundHound AI: Has seen strong growth, especially from its acquisitions and new market entry into India. However, its revenue base is significantly smaller compared to Apple’s massive business.

Siri: Siri is a key component of Apple’s ecosystem, driving customer retention and engagement. While Siri itself does not generate direct revenue, it supports Apple's larger product sales and services, which generate billions annually.

Market Position:

SoundHound AI: Competes in specific business verticals, such as restaurants and automotive, and focuses on improving operational efficiency through voice AI solutions.

Siri: Siri is integrated into Apple’s broader ecosystem, which is immensely valuable in the consumer space but does not have the same enterprise application reach as SoundHound.

Key Differentiators:

SoundHound AI: Differentiates itself by offering customized solutions for industries like restaurants and automotive, focusing on improving business processes through AI-powered voice interactions. It has also diversified into enterprise solutions through its acquisition of Amelia, which allows it to tap into new verticals.

Nuance and Alexa: Focus more broadly on speech recognition and cloud-based services, with a larger customer base and a more established presence across multiple industries.

Intrinsic Value

Based on my discounted cash flow (DCF) model, I estimate the intrinsic value of SoundHound AI stock at $3.88 per share, compared to the current market price of $11 per share. While SoundHound AI has strong long-term potential, its stock has often been overvalued, particularly after Nvidia initially invested in early 2024, causing a sharp rally.

Conclusion

Given these factors, my recommendation is to wait until after the earnings report before making an investment decision. Investors should analyze the company’s updated financials, guidance, and progress toward profitability before committing to a position in the stock.
