The Collapse Of AI MEME Stock? Do You Think BigBear.ai Still A Buy?
BigBear.ai stock is approaching $4 per share, reaching its highest levels since Feb 2025. But what’s fueling this surge in investor enthusiasm? In this analysis, I’ll break down the company’s latest developments, examine the factors driving the stock’s rise, and ultimately determine whether investors should jump in now or proceed with caution.
As of this recording, BigBear.ai stock is trading at $6, nearing multi-year highs last seen in Feb 2025. After a period of relatively flat performance, investor excitement has propelled its valuation upward. On a forward price-to-sales basis, the stock is trading at 4.9x—levels not seen since early 2022, apart from brief spikes in January 2023 and January 2024.
To understand this enthusiasm, let’s take a closer look at the company’s latest developments.
CEO’s Vision and Business Momentum
In a shareholder letter dated November 5, 2024, BigBear.ai’s CEO reiterated the company’s mission: leveraging AI to provide clarity in complex decision-making. This focus has drawn comparisons to Palantir, though Palantir remains the dominant player in this space.
Recent successes include:
-
Conductor Operating System Deployment: A live demonstration of real-time AI inferences across Edge AI devices and third-party technology providers.
-
US Army Contract: A five-year, $165 million prime contract for GFM production services, reinforcing BigBear.ai’s growing presence in defense, a sector Palantir has also thrived in.
-
VeriScan Installation at Denver Airport: A biometric verification system now operational at 14 departure gates, improving boarding efficiency and customer experience.
Financial Performance: A Cause for Concern
Despite these achievements, BigBear.ai’s financials reveal a lack of significant growth. Comparing Q3 2022 to Q3 2024, revenue has remained relatively flat, rising only slightly from $40.6 million to $41.5 million.
In the third quarter of 2024, BigBear.ai reported a 22.1% increase in revenue, reaching $41.5 million. Despite this growth, the company experienced a net loss of $12.2 million but achieved a positive adjusted EBITDA of $0.9 million. The gross margin improved to 25.9%. Notably, BigBear.ai secured a five-year, $165 million contract with the U.S. Army for GFIM-OE services and successfully demonstrated its ConductorOS platform in live Department of Defense environments. The company maintains a strong cash position of $65.6 million and has reaffirmed its full-year 2024 revenue guidance between $165 million and $180 million.
BigBear.ai’s revenue has remained relatively flat over the past few years, raising concerns about its growth potential. For example, in Q3 2022, the company generated $40.6 million in revenue, while in Q3 2024, it reported $41.5 million—a modest increase of only about 2.2% over two years.
This stagnation suggests that despite securing new contracts, the company has struggled to achieve meaningful, sustained revenue growth. In contrast, investors often favor AI companies like Palantir, which have shown steady increases in both revenue and profitability.
A flat revenue trend, combined with ongoing losses, highlights the importance of monitoring BigBear.ai’s future earnings reports for signs of real financial improvement.
More concerning is the company’s persistent unprofitability. Operating income and cash flow from operations have stayed negative, with the latest trailing 12-month losses at:
-
Operating Income: -$45 million
-
Cash Flow from Operations: -$23 million
For comparison, Palantir’s recent stock surge has been driven by strong improvements in profitability and cash flow—something BigBear.ai has yet to demonstrate.
Fundamental Analysis
Factors Behind the Flat Revenue
Heavy Dependence on Government Contracts
A significant portion of BigBear.ai’s revenue comes from government and defense contracts. While securing contracts like the $165 million U.S. Army GFIM-OE deal is positive, the revenue from such deals is often spread out over several years. This means that even if the company secures new deals, it may not result in an immediate, noticeable revenue boost.
Key Concern: Government contracts can be unpredictable and slow-moving, limiting near-term revenue growth.
Lack of Diversified Commercial Revenue
Unlike Palantir, which has successfully expanded into the private sector, BigBear.ai still relies heavily on defense and government clients. This limits its ability to scale rapidly compared to AI companies serving broader industries like healthcare, finance, and retail.
Key Concern: The company must expand its commercial customer base to achieve sustainable growth.
No Clear Path to Recurring Revenue
Many successful AI companies have shifted toward a subscription-based, recurring revenue model to stabilize earnings and drive long-term growth. BigBear.ai, however, still depends on project-based contracts, leading to inconsistent revenue.
Key Concern: Without a strong recurring revenue stream, future earnings may remain volatile and unpredictable.
Risk & Challenges
The Profitability Problem
Flat revenue wouldn’t be a major concern if BigBear.ai were at least profitable, but the company continues to operate at a loss:
-
Q3 2024 Net Loss: $12.2 million
-
Trailing 12-Month Operating Income: - $45 million
-
Trailing 12-Month Cash Flow from Operations: - $23 million
Why This Matters, The company is not only failing to grow revenue meaningfully, but it’s also burning cash. If losses continue without clear revenue expansion, BBAI may need to raise more capital, leading to potential share dilution for existing investors.
Market Sentiment: Why The Stock Is Rising Anyway
Despite weak financials, BBAI stock has surged in early 2024, approaching multi-year highs near $4 per share. This is largely due to:
-
AI Hype & Comparisons to Palantir – Investors are looking for the "next big AI play."
-
Government Contracts – The U.S. military is shifting more of its budget toward software-based AI solutions.
-
Market Speculation – Short-term traders have driven up prices based on momentum, rather than fundamentals.
Valuation
The Risk of Overvaluation
At a forward price-to-sales ratio of 4.9, BigBear.ai is trading at levels that suggest investors expect rapid growth—yet its revenue has been flat. This disconnect could lead to downward pressure on the stock if financial results don’t improve.
For Long-Term Investors: Wait and see. While the stock may continue rising in the short term due to hype, the company needs to prove it can grow revenue and improve profitability before becoming a compelling investment.
For Short-Term Traders: The stock is volatile, and momentum could drive further gains. However, without fundamental improvements, this rally may not be sustainable. If BigBear.ai can execute on its contracts, expand into the commercial sector, and improve its financials, it could become a legitimate AI investment opportunity. Until then, caution is warranted.
Should You Invest in BigBear.ai?
Given the stock’s recent Fall, the question remains: Is BigBear.ai a buy? My answer: not yet.
While enthusiasm has pushed the price higher, there isn’t enough tangible evidence of revenue growth or profitability to justify an investment at this stage. I maintain a hold rating as of December 24, waiting for concrete financial improvements before considering it a strong buy.
