Walmart (WMT) Earnings Review Offer Cautiously Optimistic Consumer Defensive Sector Outlook
$Wal-Mart(WMT)$ fiscal Q1 2026 earnings, released on 15 May 2025, offer several key insights into the retail giant's performance and provide some signals for the broader consumer defensive sector.
Key Highlights of Walmart's Q1 FY 2026 Earnings
Revenue Growth: Walmart reported total revenue of $165.61 billion, a 4.0% increase year-over-year in constant currency, surpassing analysts' expectations. This growth was driven by strong performances across all segments:
Walmart U.S.: Net sales increased by 3.2%, with comparable sales (excluding fuel) up 4.5%, driven by both transaction growth and an increase in the average ticket. E-commerce sales saw a significant jump of 21%.
Walmart International: Net sales increased by 7.8% in constant currency, with strong contributions from China, Flipkart, and Walmex. E-commerce sales also grew by 20%.
The growth was affected by Lunar New Year shopping season pulling more of the event into Q4 FY 2025, hence we saw a decrease in Q1 FY26.
Sam's Club U.S.: Net sales (excluding fuel) increased by 5.5%, with comparable sales (excluding fuel) up 6.7%. E-commerce net sales grew by 27%, and membership income rose by 9.6%.
Earnings: While revenue growth was robust, earnings presented a mixed picture:
Adjusted EPS: Came in at $0.61, exceeding the consensus estimate of $0.57-$0.58.
GAAP EPS: Decreased to $0.56 from $0.63 in the same period last year, and net income also saw a decline. This was partly attributed to a net loss on equity and other investments.
Gross Margin: The consolidated gross profit margin increased by 12 basis points to 24.2%, driven by improved margins in Walmart U.S. due to effective inventory management and a better business mix.
E-commerce Strength: Global e-commerce sales grew by 22%, highlighting the success of Walmart's omnichannel strategy, particularly with store-fulfilled pickup and delivery and marketplace growth. Walmart U.S. achieved e-commerce profitability for the first time.
Guidance: Walmart reaffirmed its full-year fiscal 2026 guidance, projecting consolidated net sales growth of 3% to 4% and adjusted EPS between $2.50 and $2.60. For Q2 FY26, the company expects net sales growth of 3.5% to 4.5% in constant currency.
Investments: Walmart continues to invest in technology, store remodels, supply chain automation, and its growing advertising business (Walmart Connect), which saw significant growth.
Outlook for the Consumer Defensives Sector Based on Walmart's Earnings
Walmart's Q1 2026 earnings offer several signals for the consumer defensives sector
Resilient Consumer Spending on Essentials: The strong sales growth, particularly in Walmart U.S. in categories like grocery and health & wellness, suggests that consumer spending on essential goods remains resilient despite potential economic uncertainties. This aligns with the defensive nature of the sector.
Importance of Value Proposition: Walmart's emphasis on value and convenience appears to be resonating with customers, driving transaction counts and unit volumes. This highlights the importance for consumer defensive companies to offer competitive pricing and accessible shopping options, especially in a potentially price-sensitive environment.
E-commerce and Omnichannel as Key Growth Drivers: The robust growth in Walmart's e-commerce sales across all segments underscores the critical role of digital channels and seamless omnichannel experiences for retailers in the consumer defensive sector. Companies that have invested in and effectively integrated their online and physical presence are likely to see continued benefits.
Focus on Efficiency and Margin Management: While revenue growth is important, Walmart's improved gross margin in the U.S. indicates the significance of efficient inventory management, reduced markdowns, and a favorable business mix for maintaining profitability in the sector. Rising costs and potential tariff impacts (as mentioned by Walmart's CEO) will likely keep margin management a key focus.
Potential for Private Label Growth: Walmart highlighted the strong performance of its private brand sales in grocery, suggesting that consumers may be increasingly willing to opt for value-oriented private label offerings within the consumer defensive space.
Advertising as a Growing Revenue Stream: The significant growth in Walmart's advertising business (Walmart Connect) signals a potential trend for other large consumer defensive retailers to leverage their customer data and reach to build out advertising revenue streams, which can contribute to overall profitability.
Cautious but Stable Outlook: Walmart's reaffirmed full-year guidance suggests a relatively stable outlook for the near term. While there are macroeconomic factors to consider, the demand for consumer staples remains consistent.
How We Can Trade The Consumer Defensive Sectors
$Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund(XLP)$
We can actually consider the following factors to take advantage of the consumer defensive sector roaring back, though the tariffs risk still exist, but we need to understand that
Positive Recent Performance: XLP has shown positive momentum recently. It was up 2.05% on 15 May compared to its opening price. Over the past year (as of May 5, 2025), the ETF had gained approximately 10.51%. The 1-month performance as of May 12, 2025, was +1.98%.
Based on the RSI momentum,we are seeing a build up of positive uptrend, and it looks to create a daily uptrend next week, this could be further powered by positive earnings coming from Target (TGT) next week on 21 May, and Costco (COST) on the 29 May.
Expense Ratio: XLP has a low expense ratio of 0.08% or 0.09%, making it a cost-efficient way to gain exposure to the consumer staples sector.
Dividend Yield: The 12-month trailing dividend yield was around 2.50% as of early May 2025, offering a source of income for investors. Quarterly distributions are typical.
Holdings Concentration: The top 10 holdings constitute a significant portion (around 61-62%) of the ETF's total assets, indicating some concentration.
Top Holdings: As of mid-May 2025, the top holdings typically include: Costco Wholesale Corp (COST) - Largest weighting, around 9.7-10.5% Procter & Gamble Co (PG) - Around 8.6-8.9% Walmart Inc (WMT) - Around 9.8% Coca-Cola Co (KO) - Around 6.3-6.5% Philip Morris International Inc (PM) - Around 6-6.2% Mondelez International Inc (MDLZ) Altria Group Inc (MO) Colgate-Palmolive Co (CL) PepsiCo Inc (PEP) Target Corp (TGT)
Sector Exposure: The fund is heavily allocated to the Consumer Staples sector, with approximately 91-99% of its portfolio in this area. Smaller allocations may exist in Consumer Discretionary and other sectors.
Index Tracking: XLP aims to replicate the performance of the Consumer Staples Select Sector Index, providing a representation of the consumer staples segment within the S&P 500.
Long-Term Investment: Consumer staples are generally considered less cyclical and can be suitable for long-term investors seeking stability and dividends. Sector ETFs like XLP offer diversification within this sector.
Risk Considerations: While often seen as defensive, XLP is still subject to general market risks and sector-specific risks. Sector ETFs can experience greater price fluctuations compared to more broadly diversified funds.
Fund Flows: Recent fund flow data indicates some variability, with positive 5-day net flows but negative 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month net flows reported around early March 2025. However, 1-year net flows were slightly positive around that time.
Though we are seeing the fund flows variability earlier, but the equities fund flow over the past week have been encouraging with 2.94 near its highs.
Upcoming Earnings - $Target(TGT)$ and $Costco(COST)$
Another few consumer defensive stocks we can consider which would be reporting earnings over the next two weeks would be Target and Costco, do look out for the earnings analysis that I have put up for these two stocks.
Summary
Walmart's Q1 2026 earnings paint a picture of a consumer defensive giant leveraging its scale, omnichannel capabilities, and focus on value to drive sales growth. While some earnings metrics were down, the underlying strength in revenue and the positive trends in e-commerce and margin management in key segments offer a cautiously optimistic outlook for the broader consumer defensives sector.
Companies that can effectively cater to consumer demand for value and convenience, while efficiently managing their operations and leveraging digital opportunities, are likely to navigate the current environment successfully.
