Memory Stocks Are Surging: Can SanDisk Deliver Another Surprise?

The memory trade is heating up again, but the biggest question is whether strong industry results can translate into another round of earnings surprises. On Wednesday, $SK Hynix(000660.KS)$ surged 13.30%, $Micron(MU)$ gained 5.86%, and $SanDisk(SNDK)$ climbed 7.66%. The rally followed record results from SK Hynix and encouraging profit guidance from Samsung, strengthening expectations that the memory upcycle still has room to run. The numbers are striking. SK Hynix reported KRW 104.6 trillion in revenue and KRW 83.3 trillion in operating profit. Samsung guided for KRW 195 trillion in revenue and KRW 107.4 trillion in operating profit. These are Samsung’s preliminary guidance figures, not final reported results. Now attention turns to SanDisk, which is scheduled to report earnings early Fri

AI’s biggest risk may not be slowing growth, but the rising cost of sustaining it. Investors celebrate accelerating revenue and cloud demand, yet overlook the billions needed to build data centers, purchase chips and secure computing capacity. Revenue growth alone cannot prove that an AI business creates economic value. The real test is whether incremental revenue generates enough operating cash to cover capital expenditure while delivering attractive returns on invested capital. This explains why AI leaders can receive different market reactions despite strong earnings. Investors are pricing tomorrow’s profitability, not just today’s growth. If spending rises faster than cash generation, impressive results may disappoint. My focus is on free cash flow, capital expenditure efficiency and

Memory chips, oil prices, Treasury yields and corporate earnings can seem like separate stories. Their connections become clearer when you trace how demand becomes revenue—and how much of that revenue ultimately turns into cash. Focus on the sources of growth, the spending needed to support it, and the cash left over. The Memory Boom Has a Weak Spot: Record Profits May Not Last Forever

AI infrastructure spending is creating an unusual situation in the semiconductor industry. Memory, traditionally viewed as a cyclical business vulnerable to oversupply, is becoming a critical part of the AI investment story. SK Hynix’s reported third-quarter revenue of ₩104.6 trillion and operating profit of ₩83.3 trillion highlight the extraordinary profitability described in the latest market update. Seagate also delivered strong results, reporting $4.23 billion in revenue and $1.5 billion in free cash flow, while Teradyne exceeded expectations. The rally is no longer just about GPUs. It increasingly includes the memory, storage and testing equipment required to support expanding AI infrastructure. SK Hynix’s Record Results Raise a Bigger Question: How Long Can the Memory Boom Last?

The AI investment cycle is creating opportunities well beyond GPUs. Memory chips, enterprise storage and semiconductor testing equipment are increasingly important as data centres expand to support larger AI models and growing computing workloads. SK Hynix rose 1.92% after reporting record third-quarter revenue of ₩104.6 trillion and operating profit of ₩83.3 trillion, alongside expanding shipments of next-generation HBM4 memory. Meanwhile, Seagate exceeded expectations with $4.23 billion in revenue, non-GAAP EPS of $7.68 and $1.5 billion in free cash flow. Teradyne also delivered results above expectations. Together, these developments highlight a broader trend: AI infrastructure spending is creating demand across several parts of the semiconductor and storage supply chain. But after such

My conviction is lower, but not broken. CXMT changes the long-term risk premium for memory. If it can turn 4F² into competitive, high-yield mass production, Chinese supply could eventually pressure conventional DRAM pricing and challenge the industry's current structure. But announcing an architecture is very different from producing server-grade DRAM economically at scale. Yield, reliability, customer qualification and volume are the real tests. Until CXMT demonstrates those, I see the sell-off as the market pricing in a credible new risk rather than proof that the memory cycle has fundamentally changed. Hock Tan's warning matters too. If capital becomes the constraint on AI build-outs, demand expectations could cool even before new Chinese supply arrives. So I would still hold quality me

Micron, Nvidia, Broadcom, and friends took a bit of a tumble! Before anyone panics and sells their GPU collection, let’s unpack what’s actually happening: 1. First time? (Spoiler: It’s not!) If you think this is the first time AI and memory stocks have tanked, welcome to tech investing! Even during mega bull runs, these stocks regularly pull back 20% to 30%. It’s not a bug; it’s a standard feature. AI giants like Nvidia have survived dozens of these "shake-outs" on their way up, and memory chipmakers take investors on this exact wild ride all the time. 2. The Memory Market is the ultimate Drama Queen Memory stocks (DRAM, NAND, HBM) are historicall

South Korea's Stock Market Crashes — Is the Global Semiconductor Bull Market Over?

Today, South Korean stocks plunged, with the $CSOP KOSPI(03121)$ index at one point falling more than 7%, breaking below the psychologically important 6,000-point level and approaching its July low: On the news front, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said at an event in Singapore yesterday that most companies see no return on their AI computing investments, questioning the long-term viability of money-losing AI labs. He said: "Many investors don't really know what they're investing in. They set absurdly high expectations, only to realize in the end that they're practically in a casino." $Broadcom (AVGO) Tan also noted that several AI companies, including OpenAI, lose tens of billions of dollars each year. Such services require massive spending on high-end c

The AI hardware trade just got hit with two reality checks simultaneously: a structural supply-side threat out of China and a demand-side paradigm shift from Broadcom. Here is the breakdown of what actually changed, what’s noise, and whether memory conviction should hold. 1. The Supply Shock: CXMT’s 4F2 DRAM Breakthrough The Announcement ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) unveiled progress on a 4F2 DRAM architecture, aimed at server/datacenter memory by end-2026. Standard 6F2 Architecture: [ Cell Area: ~6F² ] --> Scaling limit nearing CXMT 4F2 Target: [ Cell Area: ~4F² ] --> ~30-50% die size reduction Why Wall Street Freaked Out * Density Advantage: A shift from 6F2 to 4F2 design theoretically reduces cell area by roughly 30% to 50%, yielding significantly more dies per wafer withou

🚨 China Just Shook the Memory Trade. Are Investors Pricing in Competition Too Early?

One technology announcement. Four stocks under pressure. On Monday, October 12, $SanDisk(SNDK)$ fell 5.97%, $Lumentum(LITE)$ dropped 9.78%, $Micron Technology(MU)$ lost 3.88%, and $SK Hynix(000660)$ declined 4.02%. The catalyst? China’s memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced progress on a next-generation DRAM architecture that could intensify competition in the global memory market. But has the competitive threat changed overnight, or is the market pricing in a risk that still needs to be proven? 🔬 1. What has CXMT actually achieved? CXMT says it has made progress on a 4F² DRAM cell architecture, designed to fit more memory cells into a smaller area. Mainstream DRAM has traditionally used a 6F² cell design. Moving to 4F² could improve memory density and potential

CXMT’s DRAM Breakthrough: Is This a Buying Opportunity or the Start of a Memory Repricing?

The memory trade just got a new risk to consider. On Monday, $SanDisk(SNDK)$ fell 5.97%, $Lumentum(LITE)$ dropped 9.78%, $Micron Technology(MU)$ lost 3.88%, and $SK Hynix(000660)$ declined 4.02%. The trigger? China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced progress on a new DRAM architecture that could increase memory density and improve manufacturing efficiency. The company plans to introduce a server-memory product using its 4F² design by the end of 2026. But I think there are two separate stories here. 🔍 1. The threat is pricing power, not just market share The 4F² architecture aims to fit more memory cells into a smaller area than the conventional 6F² design. If CXMT can successfully scale this technology, it could eventually become a more serious competitor in server DRAM, put
